"Recruiting Stars Don't Matter?"

No. You don't win NC's playing not to lose.

A more telling question is: could KF recruit "Bama's roster" at Bama? And that's a much more emphatic no. Think a Julio Jones / Amari Cooper / Calvin Ridley type wants to come and play Kirk-ball?
Up until Lane Kiffin, Saban was playing something pretty darn close to Kirk-ball. About the same time they had Jones and most of Cooper's career.

I don't think he would recruit quite as well as Saban, but still pretty darn well. It's Alabama.

Saban is about as conservative as they come. IMO he made a mistake all year by starting Hurts. The frosh was believed to be better by most who saw him play. Fire Saban!

So you think Kirk gets those guys 2800 (Jones) & 3500 yards? Both in 3 years total?

He got McNutt 1300 in one year, 2850 in three, so yeah, I think he could. If he had the type of talent Bama, execution wouldn't matter nearly as much, since they could just overpower most teams.

I'm not trying to make the argument that Kirk is better than Saban, I'm saying that not many coaches would fail if they had that level of talent at their disposal.

Mike Shula did

Keep in mind, MM was actually in the program 4 years. Iowa's / KF's second leading receiver, DJK, came in at 2600+ over 5 years.

So those 2 are still ~800 yards short in 3 more years compared to Cooper / Jones.

He was only a receiver for 3 years, and never caught a pass as a QB. DJK's would be 2600 in 4, since you don't accumulate any stats if you RS.

My point was, as I said previously, both Cooper & Jones were 3 & done. So the examples of MM & DJK, neither of whom were able / allowed to contribute in year 1 despite having the talent to become career leaders, would seem to show a good reason why KF's style is not conducive to landing elite playmakers.

They already DID play Kirk-ball, for the most part.
