Recruiting Notes

Sometimes I contact recruits and collect tidbits that don't make it as stories. They're just notes, basically.

I'm starting a thread to post those items.

I'll kick it off with some '21 recruits with reported offers that I've recently contacted that told me they're no longer hearing from Iowa:

Willie Shaw, Marcus Mbow, Kyran Montgomery and Ian Wagner.

These are only the guys with whom I've touched base. I will add more as I make contact. I'll also use this thread for other recruiting notes without enough meat to write a full story.

Rob, what's your gut feel on Keagan Johnson announcing for Iowa? Trending up? Nebby board getting pessimistic on him going N.

Rob - Is it your feeling that the staff backs off of certain recruits based on the feedback they get from their due diligence or is that due diligence already done before they offer a kid? So then is it just position needs and the fact that some of those guys' positions have been filled by verbal commits? I've always wondered why a school just stops contacting someone they've offered....seems weird to me.

When I talked to Keagan in March, he was pretty adamant that he wasn't going to just go where his dad played. He wanted to make the best decision for himself. I've heard that a lot through the years and then watched kids end up at their parents alma mater. I got a different vibe from him. He still could end up in red, but I think Iowa is right there.

When Iowa offers, it is clear with the prospect that it is only going to take X number of players at a position. Obviously that can change due to various factors. That's the main reason the staff moves on.

However, there are times when the coaches get information after offering that could lead to them backing off. They do, however, look pretty closely at prospects before offering.

Bollers isn’t going the alma mater route...hopefully Keagan follows suit...

Rob, with Johnson committed and making it 15 in the class, how many more do you think we will take and what positions? And what strong leans do you know of? I would imagine now with Johnson, we have to really like our chances with Fidone?

Iowa hasn't signed a class of fewer than 20 since like '09 or '10. The last two have been 22 and 23 three years ago. I would expect to be similar with usual graduation and attrition.

Guys already in the '21 class, including Johnson, will be working on Fidone. The recent surge by Iowa will guys from the region has to help.

I still think Iowa takes a QB. I like its chances with Skyler Bell. DL and TE are positions being targeted. Myslinksi is a player it would take. I could also see additions at DB.

Thanks Rob. Do you know if there are any particular quarterbacks that Iowa is in on?

Austin Booker, a DE out of Indiana, has a solid tape and has the kind of frame that Doyle could do wonders with. Word is that Fleck is pushing hard for him, and of course the local schools have an edge. He would be an outstanding addition. Perhaps A.J. could give him a call....... High, high, ceiling there.

With our recent success in Indiana, I'm hoping we stand a good chance. With Johnson now committed, Booker has now moved up a notch on my wish list. I also love Fidone of course, but I see him as less of a need when you look at our stable of young TEs. We are set there for awhile.

Ideally, I'd like to see one more LB and one more DT in this class. Tyler McLaurin, LB, and Jeremiah Pittman, DT, both out of Illinois, look like solid prospects. Unfortunately, it appears we are on the outside looking in for both, with Michigan in the lead for McLaurin, and Fleck pushing hard for Pittman. Pittman reminds me of a young Jaleel Johnson. Raw athlete.

Seems like Myslinski (4th highest OC in 2021) would be a natural fit at Iowa and his timing would be perfect. It might also help that his Dad is the S&C coach for the Jaguars, I'm sure he has great respect for Doyle.

I see that the crystal balls are now flying for Booker to Minny. It stinks, but kudos to them if he signs. Underrated recruit, IMO. I could easily see him being an all-conference performer and he would have been a perfect fit for our defense.

I'm guessing he hasn't been to their campus yet. I still like our chances if we can get him on campus since it's a long time to signing day. Fleck is notorious for pressuring recruits so Booker may very well change his mind.

The latest update on Fidone that I read he said LSU, Nebraska, and Iowa are recruiting him the hardest but he wants to visit LSU, Michigan, Penn State, Alabama and maybe Notre Dame.
