Recruiing

Perhaps Fran should read the forums, as he needs to get a clue in the big ten, you need a couple guys capable of doing things on talent alone. We had no answer for Nix, Payne and Dawson when they went beast mode. We stood there and got dunked on. Same situation against Indiana and one that will play out multiple times over the course of the season. PS: I am not your brah, nor do I want to be. Thanks for the insightful comment.

Yeah no answer at all they really blew us out...oh wait we trailed by no more than three all night, and if we get a long rebound on a miss 3 we probably win. You're a clown brah.

Very simply, I am pretty sure Fran and staff recognize the need for playmakers. They are after several hard and are trying relentlessly to get good players. Francis is on a plane already again today recruiting. But, with how low our program was (rock bottom anyone?), we won't be able to get these playmakers very easily until we make the tourney, find a diamond in the rough or have a stud in state kid commit. Its an uphill climb guys, I am disappointed too but also recognize the mountain we're climbing. We were the doormat of the league.

As much as I want McCaffrey to do well, his use of scholarships leaves a lot to be desired. I am not going to call anyone out, but clearly we lack athleticism at every spot on the floor. I am not sure how adding Meyer, Uthoff and Jok make this group an NCAA team. Too slow and suspect handles at the guard spot, no guys capable of getting their own shot and abysmal 3 point shooting. Props to Basabe and McCabe for showing up tonight, but the rest of the team laid a collective egg. Possibly the worst PG play I have ever seen re: decision making.

In the absence of significant injury, Iowa will be in the NCAA Tourney next year assuming Marble returns.

You nailed it.

I am as upset as everyone they are 0-3 and crapped away 2 games at home but the idiot reactions here are getting tiring. People want to slam Oglesby and Woodbury along with knocking the coaching, recruiting and the talent on this team. Do yourself a favor, turn your computer off and walk away. Anybody with even basic basketball knowledge and is watching the games can see this is the most talented team Iowa has had since the 2005/06 season. They played the 22nd ranked team in the country last night without their best player and should have beaten them. Some of you need to wake up and think before you post.

I agree with the OP, why is Fran not getting guys like the Plumlees, or Anthony Davis, or Zeller. I mean why can't he get those guys????? I mean its not like the guys he has now are young, I mean it's not like 60% of his starting lineup are freshman.

Some people are just dumb. I'm not going to repeat what Hawkstrat said because he pretty much nailed it. Those that want Dough Thomas, Brunner etc. Those guys weren't studs when they were freshman remember that. It takes some time to develop, and it's not like Iowa was in a position 2 years ago to entice really good talent to come to Iowa.

And it is not going to get better anytime soon.

As in record or recruiting? I think we are inching pretty close to middle of the pack in the BIG, which considering we were the doormat 2 seasons ago plus the strength of the league this year isn't too bad of move. If we go 11th to 7th in 3 years after weeding out Licks guys, then 7th to 3-4th in another three thats pretty good. Give another 2-3 years hopefully we move up to the top of the pack. It's painful for fans I know, but its a process.

Recruiting wise, this staff has put in more time and effort recruiting than almost humanly possible. I wouldn't hesitate to saying double the effort Lick put in. I don't know when these guys sleep or see their kids honestly. They pulled in two top 150 players in really their first class that they had a year or more to work on. That is a great start. I have a good feeling about the 2014 class. Yes they need quicker athletes, and they know that.

Good Post

So far we have lost a close game at home against the pre season number 1, got blown out on the road by the number 2 team in the nation after playing them even for 18 minutes, and lost a nail biter at home to the 22nd ranked team without our best player. I don't see how that means we suck. A top 15 team could easily do what we have done over a 3 game span.

People say we suck because Woody is to weak with the ball, we can't shoot the 3, and we don't have enough guys to create their own shot. In reality if we didn't have those weaknesses we would be a top 10 team.

Sure, Fran should just go get players like Payne(#18) Dawson(#20),and Harris(#15)....those top 20 ranked players help win games a whole lot. Really Fran should have talked Lebron into coming to Iowa and using his college eligibilty...yea, thats the ticket.

Do we need better athletes? Yes. The only top 150 guys on this roster have been brought in by Fran(Josh,Woody and Gesell, with Uthoff coming next year). That puts us about 9th in the league in sheer talent on the roster. Slow climb from the Lick years, when we had Gatens, and that was it.
Tate,Evans ect were all SA recruits. Lick did not bring anything to the program, really,so Fran inherited a roster of unranked players.
Anthony Hubbard probably would have helped a bit,but did not work out. Too bad.
With Devyn,we win that game last nite. We are on the razors edge, and cannot afford to lose our best player vs the top half teams.
