Since I'm ill and going nowhere tonight I did some digging on recent recruiting classes. Like most of you I'm pretty pumped up about how this class could end up. That said as we always say stars don't always mean much.

Recent ** Tanner Miller, Van Sloten, Hitchens
Recent *** Morris
Recent **** Donnel, Fiedorwicz, Derby

I'm not saying the 4 stars won't shine, but they aren't always an indicator of who will provide immediate help or see the field first. This time last year I would not have expected the playing time to have worked out this way.

This class has the potential to be one of Kirks best, but depending on position and injury who knows who'll step up next season for us. I do like what we could look like in 2-3 years with the group that seems to be coming together.

That was by more a must need basis at LB and DB. TE, QB was pretty much filled and didn't need anyone to fill in. And the OL always takes some time to get used to the scheme and to get the size needed so I'm not surprised. Coker wouldn't have even played if it wasn't for injuries. So don't go dismissing the star system as not being accurate.

Also, if Miller and Morris had been at bigger schools not in Iowa they would have been a 3 and 4 star respectively.

I'm not saying stars mean everything, I know they don't, but to say they mean nothing based on the small sample size you provided is silly.

And why is Van Sloten in your example? When did he play?

I'm actually pretty much a believer that stars are a decent indicator. I'm very pleased with the quality of talent that it's looking like we will be bringing in this year.

I started this when I began to dig through the last couple of classes and I got to thinking about what I was thinking this time last year. I thought CJ would capture the #2 tight end slot for sure. I didn't expect Coker to play because of our depth at running back. I thought the learning curve and speed of the game might take Morris a while to get it at this level. Donnel was a guy who I expected to claw his way into the two deeps (see Brett). I had no expectations for Miller and frankly wondered if we'd been better saving the scholarship.

The point of this was a geeked up as we get when we're talking about Coe, Cyrus, Walsh and all of the other recruits that have committed or that we're in, we'll likely be looking back at the end of next year and be amazed that some of the guys who we're not expecting immediate returns from now turned out to be some of the first to contribute.
