Recap, Reaction From Columbus

That game was hard to watch.
Yeah 2nd half especially. Even though it was only a 4 pt game at half did anyone have any confidence Iowa would win? Hell just keep it half close cause I sure didn't. Never got that feel at all. Harding/Dix got man handled the whole game. Thelwell Freeman and Trayore were only ones that had a pulse last night. That's not enough it's just not. Now the one thing Iowa is known for they can't do and that's scoring. We have to be able to put up 80 plus to compete. 90 plus to win pretty much cause we can't defend a fence post. It's gotten pretty dang bad.

Omaha guys on the radio this morning said that Steve Forbes is already sniffing around the job and wants it. Gary Sharpe is the person who said it. Don't know his connections or what not, but he is connected.

He's having a pretty good yr at Wake Forest. He must really wanna come home if that's the case. Not sure about his contract situation. How Beth decides to do all this will be fascinating.

Not sure that hire would move the needle much. He's around 60 and hasn't taken Wake Forest to the dance in the 5 or 6 years he's been there. I think we need a younger coach with strong recruiting ties or former player who really cares about Iowa.

I don't blame anyone for feeling disappointed in the season or the past couple of years for that matter. But I highly doubt Beth Goetz is going back and forth after each game wondering whether to fire FM. These types of posts predictably always follow a loss. Just the other day when Joshua Lewis committed everyone was excited and pretty much bought in that FM was going to stay.

The road games this year have been hard to watch, no doubt. But at this point they are also predictable and it's difficult to see where we pick up a win there. And the NCAA tournament is not happening, I think we all know that. But I still can see a scenario where Fran returns. Like what has been said before, who are they going to go after? And who is going to want to come here?

The last time we got to this point we lost a good coach and end up with some All fraud guy and then a Toddler. :(

I'm of the same mindset. I'd rather have a Matt Gatens or Jeff Horner or Dean Oliver someone like that. Let em learn on the fly at first. Give em time to set the culture they want and in a few yrs be good to compete. It's gonna be all but a total rebuild job for whomever comes in anyway. Someone like Forbes would come with immediate expectations and there's no chance of us meeting those.

I can’t remember if Forbes was a serious candidate when Lickliter got the job or Fran. I agree, either way, it is a hard sell.

When it comes to former players, it comes down to the following two guys: Matt Gatens and Ryan Bowen.

I don’t think Goetz will give it to Gatens, and the track record of the former NBA player/assistant going back to coach his alma mater isn’t great. Maybe Bowen can crack the code, but there is too much evidence that suggest it would be a fail.

Forbes is not a serious candidate for all the reasons noted. We would be trading one aging coach with an incomplete recent resume with another. If Fran is shown the door or chooses to leave, there needs to be a shift in culture. We need a great coach, yes, and I hate to utter these words out loud, but we also need a person who can sell the program to the fans and get them back in the door---a guy like Row Row Row your Boat Fleck. That hurt to say.

Forbes would be one hell of a hire. Dude can recruit and has been credited with several top 10 recruiting classes while at Tenn and A&M.

He took over an absolute dumpster fire at Wake and has turned that program around. He’s got several 4* + recruits that he’s brought in.

I turned it off early in the 2nd half. Too hard to watch the incompetence the beat down. I think we miss NIT as well. Not many wins left in this year’s schedule

The announcers mentioned this and I heard it again since, that the bottom 3 finishers in conference play will not play in the Big Ten Tourney.

Wouldn't that be something, if we didn't even make the BTT...........

Tyler Tachman wrote what I felt like is a very good article today in Hawkcenttral on 'What's Wrong with Iowa Basketball'.

It is a very good analysis on what the on-court issues are with the team.

What it didn't touch on is the status of Fran McCaffrey. And, how that might be influencing the team's performance. Maybe that's Part II.

Forbes in my opinion wouldn't be an improvement. He'd already be 60 years old starting out and even though he's done a turnaround at WF, their net is actually lower than Iowa's right now. Lateral move in my mind if it happens. Can't really take what he did at East Tennessee with any credence because we all know how valid previous success at a tiny school was with Lick.

It very well might be the best guy we can get, though. Which is what it is.
