Really good game by Brian Ferentz

I don't think he called a perfect game by any means, but he did the best with the cards in his hand. I question not kicking the FG early to get points on the board. I don't put any blame on Brian or KF at this point. As you point out, this team just gets hit more and more with the injury bug, TO ABSOLUTE KEY POSITIONS, and they still compete and give them a chance to win.

It's almost like a bad accident this point, it's intriguing to watch how the hell they can keep it up and people are tuning into watch Iowa because of how the defense and special teams can pull a team in this day in age in college football. This is unheard of when looking at the stat lines, as no team should be able to even be competitive. I almost welcome this now as it is entertaining and very intriguing to see how this is going to work out. In a couple of games if Iowa continues to win, it is going to be the spotlight of national coverage because they are going question what the hell happens if Iowa continues to win, and what would the playoff committee do with this Iowa team if they would happen (low odds) to win the BIG championship.

It really is entertaining, people! BUCKLE UP!!!!!
Correct about the increase in national interest. It's like watching Pete Carill era Princeton basketball and that back cut offense. For about five years that was the team you watched for on selection Sunday in the hope that your team DIDN'T draw them.

Say what you want about our offense, but we're 6-0 when we score points. There aren't many teams in the nation can say that.

Here is the thing, Brian is highly likely not going anywhere. New AD....new boss...she can decide what she wants to with Brian moving forward....including a new contract.

There is a contract in place that stipulates what will happen if contract terms are not met.

Does she have the guts to let BF go if he doesn't reach the all the items in the agreement? Was going to use another term instead of guts, but she doesn't have a pair of what I was going to say.

If BF doesn't meet the terms and she doesn't follow a legal document, then what?

11-1, West champs. Title game.

If that happens without 325, tough call.

The only thing the contract stipulates is that they will re-evaluate at the end of year, no matter if the terms are met or not.

That is why so many people have pointed out how stupid this contract is.

It is just another classic PR blunder by Barta. He had the right intent…it is just bad execution.

Below is what's in the contract. He must meet both or it officially terminates 6-30-2024.

For Ferentz to return to his previous two-year rolling contract, the Hawkeyes must reach a mere 25 points per game -- by any means, including defense and special teams -- in 2023. Additionally, the Hawkeyes must reach seven wins, which includes a potential bowl game. Ferentz accepted a $50,000 salary decrease to $850,000 for the season. If Ferentz fails to meet either of the two incentives, his contract will officially terminate on June 30, 2024.

A lot of non-tenured academic contracts except for top brass and admin operate that way. You get re-upped at the start of the next fiscal year.

Let's consider the offense this year. The line looks marginally better than last year. That is a win. We have lost our starting QB, who has CFP experience and a Big Ten crown. We have lost two TEs who barring injury looked to me like they would be top 50 draft picks, worst case top 100. They are our only receiving threats. To be 6-1 with these injuries and road games at Happy Valley, Wal-Mart (Ames) and Camp Randall is pretty damned impressive.

I get it, people want more splash on offense, blah blah blah. But I seriously don't know what the hell people want to call with the talent we have on the field. You go to war with the army you have, not the army you want. This guy is getting the most out of the army we have. With the exception of two third down calls that went toward a player who I don't believe should have been an option in those situations (I don't throw individual guys under the bus) I thought that Brian called a near perfect game.

This is vintage Ferentz ball and reminds me of the masterful job O'Keefe did in 2004 when we were down to the 6th string tailback. You just claw everything you can and don't put the defense or special teams in a bind. That's it. This offense will get better.

For those clamoring for Brian's job, you need to go back and look at history. My guess is the Venn Diagram of people who want Brian fired is a 1:1 overlay of those who wanted O'Keefe gone. Well, O'Keefe left and it was the biggest loss our coaching staff has ever suffered because Ferentz hired Greg Davis, who made O'Keefe look like Chan Gailey or Don Coryell by comparison. What do you think he will do if forced to replace his son as OC? I honestly don't even want to consider it.
Improve the offense!!! Can't get any worse could it? I'm shouting at clouds like everyone else that's ever suggested it but keeping BF for continuity purposes just isn't a good enough reason. If they can win despite him now then they can sure as hell win despite another OC that actually is qualified and knows what they are doing.

I was thinking, what the hell happened or where was Stilianos. Injured or just passed up on the depth chart. No confidence in him???
He played some I saw him out there. I saw Pascuzzi in there quite a bit too. Hopefully Ostrenga will be back soon but I haven't a clue what's up with him. We had a true freshman 44 Leeper in there lead blocking on that 4th down play that didn't work. (BF is such an idiot) The TE unit is just all hands on deck now

Could Citibank stock get any cheaper when it hit $20 in 2008? Yes, yes it could (it has reverse split and is still a fraction of that $20 price it hit in 2008). Could Iowa's offense go in reverse after we lost Ken O'Keefe? Sure could. And it did. If Ferentz was forced to replace the Brain I have a horrible feeling that he would burn the program to the ground. Like to the point where we would be discussing firing him mid-season.

At this point with us down our QB1 and two fairly high draft picks at TE I place absolutely no culpability on Brian Ferentz for poor results. We are the walking wounded out there and if he just claws for some first downs, doesn't turn the pill over, and manages field position I would say he is doing everything we can hope for. The competition starts to soften up here, as well, so maybe things could turn around a bit. But looking at who we will have out running routes, I am not seeing much hope for optimism beyond maybe putting up 13-ish points per week on the offensive side of the ball.

Really watch the line, buddy. It's getting better, but it is not good. There is very little that you can call with the line and the receiving corps/TEs we have left. We could either lose out or win out. Just enjoy the ride.

I recognize the poor offensive output but I have no problem with game called Saturday. It was what the doctor ordered to beat Wisky. The O-line improvement was what I noticed most. Knowing we gonna run the ball we still got 200 yards against a decent D line/defense. This Saturday will be another interesting game plan and game.

It reminded me of 2015 when The Brain was run game coordinator and we had Canzieri at tailback. It was just a steady diet of lulling the defense to sleep and then bam, one guy overcommits and someone can't get the gap or edge and we score on a long run. We finally have solid tailbacks and I think Brian's subtle tweaks on the scheme and look give us a decent shot to have a solid rushing attack. It ain't pretty, but if we get it humming and can get 35 minutes TOP in each remaining game we will be 11-1 while averaging maybe 13 PPG on offense.

I gotta think there is something almost freeing about the situation for Brian. Or for any OC for that matter. Throw all the expectations out the window. Forgot about all the previous options and worrying about who might be bitching about touches. Look at who is available that week, and how they might manufacture a few first downs to get into field goal range a couple times. Or come up with a misdirection or two that might pop for a TD.

I bet KOK had the time of his life in '04.

I believe that KOK loved 2004 and the man had just unbridled enthusiasm when the regular playbook got shredded in that game against Pitt when we were down 17 in the 4th quarter where we came back to win it. I think a few dudes on offense are going to step up and the play calling is going to drive d-coordinators totally insane.

On 10-16-2023 the best hope is the Iowa offense can sustain a rushing game and do just enough passing to keep possession of the ball to keep drives alive. Iowa actually had possession of the ball longer than Wisconsin, but not by much. There is some hope that Iowa can rush against Minnesota. The Gophers are ranked 65th nationally in rushing defense and 74th in scoring defense. Their pass defense is ranked 85th and the overall defense is ranked 63rd.

My hope is that D Hill can get better at passing on short route plays. Adding that dimension would produce better offensive numbers.

True to an extent, but there a lot of really bad teams out there who are not last in the nation in offense.
