Reading part three of the SI article.....

Look i'm an optimist about our team. I had a thread earlier this week in which i got ripped for everything from my lack of knowledge of how much a shrink costs to being a kum bay yaher. I'm reading this SI article today, parts 1-3 of which are up on cnnsi.com about the Oklahoma State program under Miles and Gundy and I can't help but think how insane that stuff sounds. Honestly it makes me think it could be a lot worse than having a 4-8 team. We could be Ok. State and have everyone in the nation read about us like that; just crazy crapola. Of course right after that I told a friend and fellow hawk fan- "if we don't run for 200 yards against ISU right up the middle everyone should probably lose their job." Man their run defense is brutal.

It is impossible to run a completely clean program, the primary reason being that if boosters are paying players without your knowledge they will still penalize the program.

I went to school in Iowa City for 4 years, and Im sure there are others on here who did as well. Spend enough Saturday nights in bars and clubs and you see players driving cars they can't afford, wearing clothes they can't afford and showing money they shouldnt have.

You think it doesn't happen at Iowa you are wrong, we just dont have the uber rich boosters who are flashy about it and get noticed.

I think the SI story has a lot of BS in it...a LOT of BS in it. Like, lawsuit BS...Pro-Boone-o lawsuit-ish

And even then, there's not a whole lot there. They are really stretching the material they do have to try to increase page views. SI is going to come out of this looking worse than OSU by far.

don't you think they'd be smarter than that? i know you think it's BS, but i just don't think they would be making this stuff up.

i guess we'll see, but i disagree.

I'm not "flabbergasted" by the story.

What I am flabbergasted about is the lack of flabbergastation amongst the sports-viewing world, and in particularly, myself.

The word jaded comes to mind. Actually, the phrase "haves and have nots" comes to mind.

Wetzel wrote a great article which sums up my feelings as well. He was spot-on about getting rid of the BCS and he's spot on again.

It's featured on Yahoo sports. Check it out.

The SI piece interviewed 90 people and only found twelve with axes to grind. The author is a Sooner fan who writes articles about teams that play against the Sooners. The people at Yahoo write stories after they find bank statements, receipts for gifts, and other physical evidence. Evans just has testimony from players kicked off the team seven years ago.

Your team could actually be competing for conference championships, imagine how sickening that would be.

If the SI article made them vulnerable to a law suit they wouldn't have run it. Articles like that are run by the legal department and sourced checked plenty before they ever go to print.

You are tellin me the school didnt keep records of people taking tests for players or people givin them money and that some accused of wrongdoing are denying it?? That's weird.

No, more like the players who are making the accusations have already been proven to have lied about certain parts of their stories and, best case scenario, the authors did a very poor job of fact checking. But the most credible sources are always disgruntled former players, most of who were kicked off the team and arrested at some point.

You are always vulnerable to a lawsuit as anybody can sue anybody at anytime, the real question is whether you have a valid claim.

Unless SI knew what they were printing was false, I don't see what they did wrong.

So 9 guys all got together and decided to tell pretty much the same story? Don't know if I buy that, but not sure I believe everything that was said either. Garbage journalism is all we have now, why verify facts when you can tell a shocking story that sells magazines and draws web traffic?

There aren't any blanket denials coming from Okie State and their fans, just perspective that its a handful of guys who were kicked off the team in the past decade.

Ignorance isn't a defensible position for libel.
