Ratio of Iowa fans to ISU fans?

Here in this part of IL, you never see anything about ISU be it shirts, hats, or license plates. Quite a bit of Hawk stuff. I do think there are more closet ISU fans than meets the eye in E Iowa. No, I am not one of them. That's why I didn't go to ISU to school and Iowa didn't have my major.

On games days against various B1G schools, you occasionally see OSU stuff and a few locals are IU fans, but the Iowa stuff comes out of the wood work. Sometimes quite ridiculous and funny especially with well retired types. Getting tickets at Champaign isn't very hard anymore. The rank and file here really have lost interest in both sports, but especially football. About 3-4 years ago they were about where Iowa football is now. Now few care. Basketball fans have little connection with this IL team.

Well lets use some Cyclone "logic." Only people that went to Iowa State cheer for Iowa State. This is what makes their fan base so much more "devoted" than Iowa's fan base. Looking at years 2001-2010 the average number of students entering ISU is ~5,500. Now lets say that 50% are from the state of Iowa so they automatically cheer for ISU. The other 50% they attempt to brainwash and get 25% to cheer for ISU. So that means every year they get about 4,100 fans. Now because we are talking about just Iowa we need to make an assumption about how many stay in Iowa. Lets take a guess of about 80%, this means each year they get 3,300 fans in Iowa. Well Iowa has a little more than 3 million people and the number of students is larger than 20+ years ago. ISU was founded in 1858 but lets say anyone who attended school there before 1940 has passed away as this would put them close to 90. So we have 73 years of school * 1,500 students (pulled this out of thin air to average # of students over that 73 years that stayed in Iowa). That means there is only like 110,000 ISU fans in the state of Iowa. So we are talking more like 4% ISU fans to 96% Iowa fans.

This once again is off the assumption that ISU fans claim their fans went to ISU and most hawk fans never step foot on Iowa's campus. Thoughts?

My thoughts are that not all 3 million people are sports fan so that was a stupid post.

My brother lives in rural western Iowa. It's pretty much Cyclone country in his neck of the woods. When I've visited him, there is a lot of cardinal and gold on display. I'd say north and west of Des Moines it's closer to 50-50 than you might believe. Over all, I'd say it's closer to 70-30.

GO HAWKS!!!

We need something to heard them up so we can get an accurate count. Maybe a soil judging contest would draw them out?

Ill say it again, here in Des Moines they are thick as thieves. Every one of them wears that same dumb grey sweatshirt with Iowa state in red. Makes me want to goat kick them square in the mons pubis.

There is not many people in western Iowa compared to Eastern Iowa. We could think about it city wise as well. Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport and Dubuque are all Iowa dominated. Des Moines has more Iowa fans than ISU fans. Ames is probably the only town that has more ISU fans than Iowa fans.

Or how about a quick nut slap, aka bag tag as you walk by one of the grey sweatshirt wearing ag alumnus at the mall. "That's for the grey sweatshirt buddy, think twice next time".

What about those Benedict Arnold Bradley fans that were born and raised on Iowa soil???? Now THEY should be rounded up.

There are more Iowa fans here in Ames than I would have thought before I moved. I might give Iowa a 5 or 10% stake of fandom in Ames, where in Iowa city I'm guessing it's 1% ISU.

Entire state of Iowa? Probably 70-30 in favor of Iowa.

DSM area? 55-45 in favor of Iowa. My neighborhood is littered with Cyclones.

Sioux City is very much a Hawk town. more Husker fans here than Cyclone fans, but definitely still a strong Iowa lean.

Let's do this give your estimate of the area you live. I live in a small town about 30 miles from Ames. 50-50 Iowa to ISU fans. I used to live in the 30 minutes from IC and it was 9-1 Iowa fans.

DSM 60/40 or 55/45. Dude, it feels close, my office, car plates, restaurants, my neighborhood. They're fricking everywhere man and its creeping me out!!

I'm not sure really what are the actual numbers... need to distinguish between paying, fair-weather and "true" fans, Iv'e lived in North Carolina for over 30 years and travel often enough, in those years I've encountered fans wearing IA ST colors... 5 or 6 times.

I've encountered and engaged Iowa fans wearing Iowa colors (or myself wearing such) hundreds of times. Certainly the Hawkeye fans travel and live out side the state a bit more.
