random thoughts...starting with kickoffs...

Forgive the long post...

Can anyone tell me why we cannot find a kicker who can kick to the endzone? There has got to be a kicker available that can get the thing into the endzone. Don't know why I thought of this but it actually can be a BIG advantage. I watched the NE/OSU game and NE avg field position started at the 35-40, thats a big deal.

I think we can still get to 6 or 7 wins, but NOT with the offense that took the field on Saturday, that offense spells a 4-5 win season, at best. Yes, I know PSU has a good D, but not so good that we only score 3 and only get in the redzone once.

Everyone want to point to one thing: Off scheme, Def scheme, recruiting, "old school" mentality, talent(or lack thereof), retention of talent, depth, experience, preparation, luck of the bounce, coaching.....and I honestly believe it is a piece of ALL of the above, and I think most people would agree, and I also believe that's what is causign the level of meltdown and anxiety we are seeing in the fanbase and HawkeyeNation, because when you have potential issues in so many facets and can't put your finger on just one or two things it gives pause on the direction of the program.

I am NOT in the "fire the staff" club, (well, maybe in the height of heartbreak/pain on Saturday I may have briefly had the thought). Just would like to see a little more aggression and a few more sets on both O and D (I can honestly say I would have been fine with a turnover throwing down the field at the end of the first half, rather than sitting on it.) Recruiting woes will hopefullly be remedied. My biggest complaint is that the philosophy doesn't really allow for "adjustments" to be made and puts all success/failur squarely on the shoulders of execution. In game adjustments don't really seem to happy as clearly as other games I see - but I am not a coach, just a avid/diligent fan.

...many other thoughts, not doom and gloom, just thoughts, concerns, fears, etc... Myself, like many on this board, simply need an outlet for frustration...some are a touch more knee jerk than others and some are just dilusional...and yet others are just here for the entertainment...and to show everyone how "clever" they are. I live in Omaha, NE and don't have a lot of outlets to really vent about the Hawks (to make it worse I have to live with all these freakin ne fans - people who don't live around NE have no idea how awful it can be).

I want to believe the Captain can turn it around, but it just "feels" like were gonna need a little luck, some good recruits(again with a little luck), and gameplans that use what we have currently.

Turn it around Hawks !!!!! - 7-5 is doable if we win the games we "should" and steal one or two we "shouldn't". 7-5 not great but something to build on..For all those talking about next year and a further drop in talent/experience, that's way too far away and too many things can change, for the better or worse, to be AT ALL concerned with it now....

Go Hawks - I'll be watching, wishing, hoping, praying......

I see this as a team that needs to ride momentum and confidence. Since about halfway through last year it seems like we fold when challenged or hit a roadblock, they folded a bit (Pitt game obviously a different story)

I agree that our kicker does not sem to have a huge leg. Yet a lot of fans are screaming for KF to try a 50yd fg on that first drive. If he cannot kick that far with a run up on kickoffs, can he did with fgs?

Perhaps KF knows his kicking range, and knew he could not hit it from 50 yds away?
We punted and put them inside their ten yard line,so I believe he made the right call...just me.

Didn't Meyer just kick a 50 yarder, against ISU, I think?

Maybe Kirk doesn't want to kick it in the end zone?????? Believe this has been answered 1000x times.

perhaps that small part of my post has been addressed. If so, that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever....none.

wow. a lot of angst on here.

Yes. He has the leg for 55 but no more.

If you could just snap your fingers and find a kicker who can get you lots of touchbacks, everyone school would have one. Perhaps its not so easy. The staff has been offering schollies to kickers, but I guess to the wrong ones. If only someone could get a message to the coaching staff that touchbacks are a good thing. This hard-hitting insight could surely help the team.

Shouldn't that overblown rugby player be able to do it?

There are many a team in the NFL that use their punter to kickoff because it's about strength and not accuracy, they can reach the end zone easier. I wonder if they've looked into that, maybe they have tried it in practice but have only found a marginal difference. Frequently starting from the 20 can be hard to overcome.

We are doing just fine on the recruiting front. We had a couple bad recruiting years in 08/09, but our last 2 classes have been excellent. On top of having poor classes a couple years ago, a lot of them have left the program. In a couple years when the 10/11 recruits are SR's and JR's we should see a much better team.

KF's success runs in three year cycles. 99,00,01 down, 02,03,04 up, 05, 06,07 down, 08,09,10 up.

So Iowa is just at the start of a down cycle now. Probably does have something to do with those couple of shaky recruiting years and attrition. Might also have to with certain guys getting a lot of PT over the previous 4 years.
