Random thoughts on Iowa Hoops Season (stats) to date

People are nervous about leaning on freshmen. That's hardly an outrageous or unrealistic concern. 9-9 is realistic (not to mention a better record than last year). People hope for more, but they choose to keep a level head when setting expectations. Like Tmoney said, nobody is calling for 5-13.

If Marble can continue to lead this team as he has the last two games, Iowa won't be "leaning" on freshman as much as they did say in the two losses and the ISU game.

That is not to say that they won't be major contributors because they will, but being the third option in a lot of cases will not do Woodbury/Gesell/Clemmons any harm.

These freshman are different than some of the past Iowa freshman, like the five classes prior to Fran. When Gesell, Woodbury are scoring, Iowa is a different team.

There is one huge difference this season, Iowa seems to be exerting a lot more effort on defense this season, given they actually have real depth that also has experience they can afford to do that. I really enjoy them flying around in the zone defense, they don't stand still at all and force a ton of bad shots in it. Also, if the three point shooter isn't there, I like the weakside rotation to rebound, or contest a shot.

A lot of pastries on the BoneG schedule for the hox. Suppose they sweep those 8 against the bad teams listed, and maybe win one against WIsconsin, but lose to every decent team in conference. 9-9 in conference...do they dance?

I would think we MUST be 9-9 PLUS two BTT wins to have a shot. For every "extra" conference win, it probably lowers BTT win by a "1/3" to "1/2" win, i.e., 10-8 and we still need 2 , 11-7 and we need 1 BTT win, etc.

I just have a hard time seeing us do much better than 10-8 unless we stay injury-free AND a team like MSU/Illinois/Minnesota finishes below us. My "guess" on B1G regular season:

1) Indiana
2) Michigan
3) OSU
4) MSU/Illinois/Minnesota

If we are solidly in 7th spot, we need 2 BTT wins, IMO. 5th or 6th leaves us needing at least 1 BTT win, and if lose in next round, it would have to be to one of the teams mentioned above. If we finish 5th or better, we're pretty much in, unless B1G becomes a blood-bath, parity-wise.

It's how we do against MSU/Illinois/Minnesota that makes or breaks our tourney chances. If we can steal a win from one of the top three WITHOUT choking against lower-tier teams, that would be ideal. It's also a tall order.

I'm more concerned about Gesell and Clemmons, specifically. Not about their scoring, but their ability to play the point in B1G play. In the two games against bonafide good point guards, we really struggled. There's quite a few guys like Green and Armstead in the Big Ten: Burke, Craft, Appling, Hollins, and even Abrams. There's legitimate reason to be a little cautious right now.

You just keep troolling around, so the two games they lost were against cupcakes...gotcha

No, VT < Georgia Southern a bad team. Likely in lower half of ACC

WSU would finish in lower 1/2 of B1G

Simple deduction.

Show me what the B1G stats are at end of Jan. Then I'll care.

Take out those 2 teams and the average opponent is what....say > 250 RPI?

That is why VT doesn't make the tournament, they are always a quality team, but have the unspeakable losses to teams like GSU. Bottom half of ACC, we'll see, but they will likely be squarely on the bubble if they happen to win 20 games. FYI: GSU won't be their only head scratcher loss.

WSU, could care less where they finish in the BIG, The Valley has become a multiple bid league and they have a legit shot at getting to the NCAA tournament.

The two losses are not going to keep Iowa out of the tournament. Iowa has to beat the bottom teams as much as possible and then have 2-3 wins against Indiana, MSU, Illinois, Minnesota.

Iowa has gotten better in the BIG under Fran, so I will take that into account and will be just fine in the BIG when all is said and done.

Iowa has just three players averaging over 17.3 minutes per game. Just three! But it has six averaging between 15.8 and 17.2

Marble: 31.5
White: 26.8
Gesell: 25.1
May: 17.2
Basabe: 17.0
Woodbury: 16.9
Clemmons: 16.9
Oglesby: 16.3
McCabe: 15.8

Indiana has six players averaging over 22 minutes per game and another player at 15.8. Illinois has seven over 20 minutes per game. Michigan has five over 21.8 and three over 30, with a sixth at 14.3. I will stop there, but so far Iowa has the deepest rotation of players getting at least 179 minutes of time than any team in the Big Ten. Iowa is the 2nd least experienced team in the Big Ten according to Ken Pomeroy and only 14 other teams from power conferences are less experienced than Iowa.

Iowa jumped up from 50th to 44th in Ken Pomeroy's rankings from yesterday. Iowa's SOS dropped from 295th to 319th though. Odd. Pomeroy now projects Iowa to be 20-11 on the year and 9-9 in league play...which is exactly what I predicted before the season began. Iowa's RPI dropped after last night's win as 50% of the formula is based on your opponents strength, 25 % on that of your opponents opponents and just 25% on your own wins...and home wins count for less than road wins. Iowa's SOS will be just fine by the end of the year as far as a tourney resume, but they are going to have to beat a few ranked teams and not just feast on NW (2), Neb (2), PSU (2), Purdue (2).

Yeah are weak non-con really doesn't matter because the Big ten is going to give us about 12 games against tournament level teams.

Your proclaimations of fanhood notwithstanding, I've never met a single Iowa fan who refers to our team as "the hox". I have heard plenty of Clowns and Goofers do it. It seems you either suffer from massive self-loathing or your entire edifice on this board is a sham. In either case; keep on keepin' on, Ghost.

If we finish 9-9 in conference, we dance.

Ghost derp

For once I agree with you Ghost (even though I really can't believe you are a fan of the "hox" or "BoneG" although we all know you luvin' your trollin' and any attention you can get)

If Iowa finishes 9-9 with no wins against the top 5 they will finish 20-11. They then need to win 2 games in the Big Ten Tourney, become a "bubble" team and will get in.

Agree with what? I didn't propose an argument, I asked a question. An excellent question at that.

You gaiz need to lighten up, 'specially you MHA. In addition to being the funniest person here, I am also solidly in the top 5 as far as intelligence. I bring teh sports takes and bring them HARD. Don't get mad when you can't keep up.

Semantics, linguistics, confusion, rhetoric.... what's the point?

I didn't make a point... I asked about the point.

I didn't create a straw man or his argument, the devil made an advocate of what I wanted to say.

Along with that I'm the most humble, funniest and smarter than you.

Sheesh... someone no longer to be named or never to be responded to again (I mean never... you are ignorned).... don't get mad at me.
