1) Do not underestimate two areas of the Iowa f-ball team that will have an impact on the success of the 2010 season.
a) Ryan Donohue - With a stout D & prob the best D-line in the nation, one cannot put a price on a punter that can change field position & knock kicks within the 10 yrd line as Donohue & his teammates covering those punts. Iowa's Donohue & D can control the line of scrimmage which can give Iowa a field goal here & there which is so important to Iowa in close games. Deadly weapon.
b) Success of O-line - Yes, it's obvious that an outstanding season balances on the success of the O-line, but the point I want to make is not to overlook that this young O-line gets to practice against maybe the nations best D-line on a daily basis. That will be huge in an excellerated development which many teams don't have as a luxery.

2) Iowa is really seeing the dividends of hiring coach Erik Cambell - In years back, Iowa was never known as being a strong team with regards to the WR position & more importantly depth at this position. Iowa had players that were "serviceable" at WR but not many that would really scare another team. With coach Cambell, Iowa has really seen great development at this skills position along with some quality depth. He has shown he can take a raw talent in Marvin McNutt & mold him into this position. This will pay dividends down the road with recruiting WR's at Iowa & should be fun to watch.

3) Depth of Whole Iowa Team - This has been a nice development over the past 5 or so years. Iowa got caught with lack of depth in the 2005 season (especially at d-back) & ended under expectations. The coaches have done a good job of developing depth, especially in the CB's & safeties. They haven't just developed depth but quality depth with players getting experience. More young players are getting game experience. This has really helped in transitioning from year-to-year.

4) Coaching changes in the Big10 - The Big10 didn't have any coaching changes prior to the start of the 2010 season. The start of the 2011 season could be interesting with the possibility of up to 4 coaching changes taking place: Ron Zook (If Illini is willing to eat the $) - Tim Brewster - Rich Rodriquez (Michigan will not put up with a mediocre year) - & unfortunately Bill Lynch (A nice guy & he really doesn't have a prayer with what he has to work with).

5) Dave Revsine - He does a really good job at the Big10 network. I have always been impressed with him as he seems down-to-earth & a legitimately nice guy. He doesn't go to the extreme of either side with his thoughts or information.
On a side note, I think Brad Nesserly & Sean McDonough are two of the better play-by-play guys in the business. I like Griese thrown into the mix as well.

6) Brandon Wehger - I realize I shouldn't comment on this & this is the 1st & only comment I will make. I was on vacation when this circus happened & have honored Jon's request not to comment or start a thread. So please don't ban me Jon. Support this young man as I am sure it is tough to decide what he wants.
Let me preface my statement with that I don't know anything or have any facts about the Wehger situation so don't run with anything & create rumors. The point I want to make is that none of us knows what is really going on (besides his coaches & teammates), so we should let him have his space. We don't know, it could be some sort of health problem that is not disclosed or other situation. I guess it makes me wonder when going back to the Iowa - OSU game last year when he warmed up & something came on abruptly. It makes me wonder if there is some kind of naggy health issue he has to deal. KF has always honored his players privacy (see Brian B. last year) sec to health problems. Everybody nails KF for being so hush hush all the time, but in actuality, he is only doing what is respectful & correct. Again, this is just pure speculation but makes me wonder. Again, support the young man & let him have his space.

7) Brett Bieliema - Has seemed to ridden the waves at Wisky & building a solid program. Has solidified his place as an up-&-coming coach in the college f-ball ranks. Hayden Fry's coaches have done an outstanding job over the years & all should be proud who are affiliated as teams, coaches or fans. It will be interesting to watch the success of Scott Tolzien this year. He put up some nice #'s last year & is really coming into his own as a solid Big10 QB. He & Stanzi have some similarities as do Wisky & Iowa in general. It will be interesting how he succeeds if a team is able to stop Wisky's run. Hopefully, Iowa can get some pressure on him from its front four. More than likely Wisky will get its running yrds, the key is not to let Tolzien beat you when he has to.

8) Starting out Fast - Iowa really needs to start out fast by putting a good whooping on E Illinois. They cannot play down to the level of teams anymore & need to set the precedence, especially with lower rated teams. This is more important this year than any other. Iowa has not had a good blow-out win in its first game for many years now. Iowa vs Montana was too close & I believe there hasn't been a "blow-out" since a year prior to the Montana game. Long gone are the days when Hayden's team would blow-out its first competitor 62 - 10.

Well, that's all for now. Feel free to comment.

Some great thoughts there Melrose, I'd add Mark Jones and Bob Davie to commentators. I really like when they call the games

Bill Lynch isn't going anywhere. He was whipping us last year, and most likely would have won the game hadn't it been for a 'few' bad calls that went against Indiana.

BW - it is fairly clear what he is up against, and I don't think it is some kind of nagging injury.

Good thoughts, Melrose.

I think you're going in the wrong direction with No. 6 but I'm not going to say any more, and agree BW needs to be given the time and space to address what's going on. Kirk certainly seems to be doing that, and likely can't say anything beyond what he has already said.

Re: 7, agreed Hayden's coaching tree is big, strong and bearing fruit, and I like to see all athletes and coaches with Iowa ties do well (except when we play them). I think Hawkeye fans would have a more favorable opinion of BB if he would give Iowa more respect when they lose to us instead of hanging it all on his team, and if he would stop -- as it appears from a distance, at least -- following the trail of Hawkeye recruiters and attempting to dissuade Iowa commits from coming to Iowa City. (He also shouldn't be afraid to show that reported Hawkeye tat on his ankle.)

I will add two concerns for this year:

-- Running back. IF BW is gone for the season and with Coker's injury, our depth at this position is suddenly not so much. An injury to A-Rob or Hampton (or shudder, both), could leave us short at RB.

-- Was a bit concerned to see the BTN tweet about Stanzi apparently continuing to have problems with INTs. Was hoping he would have been able to work that out in the off-season. I know there are still four or five weeks of practice and early games until the schedule starts to pick up with AZ and hopefully the staff can help him clean it up. But his pick-sixes last year made several games closer than they should have been. Our offense simply should not be giving the other team points, ever.

#6) Yea. I wasn't referring to an injury, per se. I wonder more about some kind of health issue which are two separate deals. There are health conditions such as Chron's Dz, irritable bowel syndrome, certain heart conditions that can affect many people's lives. People can live with them but it affects quality of life if you know what I mean. Hopefully is not the case. Enough wondering. I'm done.

Correct about the RB concerns. This seems to follow Iowa each year for some reason. Here we thought Iowa was sitting deep at RB with no concerns at that position & here we are again.

Stanzi & INT - This caught me as well when I read. Thought crap! But, I do like how he is confident & takes chances. Just want to be smart on when to take chances.

I didn't state "nagging injury", I stated health problem. All I'm saying, with athletes, it's not always sports related injuries that can have an effect. Many could have other health problems just like the rest of the general public.

Griese? Really? I think he's terrible. It doesn't seem like he prepares at all and he can't adapt to the ebbs and flows of the game. Here's an example. At the beginning of the Iowa-PSU game 2 seasons ago, Griese's theme was that PSU needed to build up some style points in the game to impress poll voters. When it became clear that Iowa was going to hang with PSU the whole game, Bob seemed to be lost.

Re: #2 - Another position that benefits from having Campbell recruit/develop good receivers is the QB. It has to help in QB recruiting to have a solid WR group year in and year out.

I'd add ....

David Raih - The young man got mentored (as a coaching assistant) by Norm Chow at UCLA for a little while. He's a tenacious hard worker and seems to have a fine football mind. Now David is back at Iowa and has already helped to give the Iowa QBs an extra set of eyes and opinions. Definitely a valuable resource for Iowa's QBs.

Jordan Bernstine - Valuable guy who instantly helps us by pushing Hyde, but also adds the versatility of being able to be a nickelback and a backup safety. Conklin was pretty solid as a backup safety last year ... I think that Bernstine will be ROCK solid. I'll be surprised if Bernstine isn't starting in 2011.

Brad Herman - Don't sleep on a guy who will help us to be able to pull off 3 TE sets. Our multi-TE sets are VERY important for helping us to pound the rock while still creating mismatches in the passing game. Herman is a VERY important ingredient there.

Mike Daniels - I know I'm biased ... but I really suspect that Daniels is better than Michigan's Martin. And, FYI, Martin is Michigan's best defensive lineman. Through the years, how often have Iowa fans say that their #5 defensive lineman is better than Michigan's #1? Wicked indeed!

Big 10 parity - Even though I don't expect much from Illinois and Minnesota ... each squad has the potential to win games that they shouldn't. Without a doubt each squad has some legit talent on their rosters. However, poor coaching continuity has really lamed each program. The nice thing about a program like these two is that they're capable of making some of Iowa's competition stumble ... and that ain't a bad thing. I expect a little bit more from Purdue ... and we'll fortunately not have to worry about them upsetting us.

IU and NW road games - I know that Iowa fans seem to worry about the Northwestern game ... and some will choose to worry about the IU game because of what happened last year. However, I really think that having BOTH of those games as road games will help the Hawks to remain focussed.

Difference of opinion with Melrose on IU - While I agree that Lynch is on a pretty warm seat, he and his staff have been doing a pretty darn good job in the recruiting game. I actually believe that the talent level at IU has continued to improve. While IU has been kinda down the past 2 years, the team has been fighting pretty well. Furthermore, Kellen Lewis's off-field antics ended up setting the program back in at least one season. I think that the IU administration recognizes the tough challenges that Lynch and Co have faced. If IU continues to be competitive and can start turning more of those close games into Ws ... Lynch's seat will cool down in a big hurry.

On Illinois - I can't help but agree with Loren Tate (a sports-media type who covers the Illini). Just as long as the Illini don't suck big balls ... I anticipate that we'll be able to enjoy Zook jokes through the next two years. Who picks him up after that? I have no idea ....

Not that this is very important, but Iowa beat Maine 46-3 in the opener in 2008 and Florida International 42-0 in the 2nd game that year. We pulled most starters at halftime of that game. So yes, we have had blowouts early in the year very recently, just not last year.

Stanzi having INT problems? Throwing agains't our corners is not such a bad thing. If he throws them when the real bullets start flying then I will be concerned. Not yet.

As for Stanzi, I truly believe he has all the tools. It seems to me he is a bit more tenative throwing the out passes and needs to put more zip on them.

Love him and wouldn't change him for any other B10 QB.

This is where most of the pick-6s seem to happen, which is natural since there are fewer offensive players on the fringes to make the stop on an INT. Perhaps he does need to zing it a bit more on the out patterns. Also, do a better job of seeing more than the receiver in that part of the field.

With the knowledge that opposing teams may know the tendency with that play & Stanzi, it surely wouldn't hurt to play off it & run a pump & go & have the receiver slip down the sideline for a downfield pass play & potential big yarder. Did you read this KOK, did you read this!! ;)

i misread - i saw 'naggy' health and coupled it with injuries.

Neither is his problem.

Hoping that KOK and Ricky "dummy" the out patterns quite a bit and try to run it inside most of the time.
