It's a frequent talking point about the Iowa football program under Kirk Ferentz is a developmental program. We can debate the strengths and weaknesses of Kirk Ferentz, but even his harshest critics would have to concede that the coaching staff does a solid job of developing lightly recruited players in high school into productive college players and possibly into pro prospects. On the flip side of this, Ferentz isn't exactly known to light recruiting trail on fire which is something that counter balances his and the coaching staff's biggest strength.
I'm a Niners fan and I was was looking at some of the links regarding the team and it had a quote from Shanahan about CJ Beathard and also another quote from Scott McCloughan who is a former Niners front office guy. McCloughan has some alleged personal demons when it comes to alcohol, but he is a pretty solid talent evaluator. He talked about Beathard in the link but the more interesting quote to me was about what he said about the Iowa program with Ferentz as a coach and how they teach the game. It might not be the most sexy system or program, but you know what would be sexy to me if I was a recruit? Maximizing my talent and possibly achieving the dream of being a professional football player and Iowa makes that possible to those who have a legit chance about as well as any other program in the country.

After drafting Beathard, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Iowa’s pro-style system aided his evaluation.

“One thing that helps is being able to see guys play the way you’re going to ask them to play,” he said. “I think that helps with being at Iowa, having watched the system that he’s in. it’s easier to see.”

McCloughan said something similar.

“I was watching all these (quarterbacks) in he spread offense – they don’t call a play,” he said. “It comes in from the sidelines. They’re in the shotgun every snap. With (Iowa coach) Kirk Ferentz and their staff, they do an excellent job of teaching players how to be players. I took (OL) Brandon Scherff out of there and Day 1 he was a stud. He was taught the right way – practice wise, weight-room wise, everything. They’re taught the right way.”

Yeah, well, the tide was definitely turning until Bobby Kennedy and Chris White decided to screw it all up.
