Quit sagging off into the lane and guard 3 pt shooters

I/we have said it before but I assume the coaches have the players sagging in the lane to help out leaving shooters wide open at 3 pt line.

This is killing this team, it is like a shoot around for the opponents and always gives their ball handler an easy dump off pass.

Just play/guard your man because this ain't working. We are too slow to recover.

When the opposition have good guards....they ultimately carve our defense to shreds, hit the open guy, and "wham bam thank you ma'am", the 3 ball goes up, and it's good, making a guy who averages 12 minutes a game and 4 points a game, into an All-American. Listening to Bobby yesterday, he said it very simply, "Illinois is spreading our defense out, getting penetration, and simply dishing out to the open man", thus, hitting uncontested 3's all game long....

Yep and the only game in the last 7 or 8 that we covered the three line even decently was the Michigan game. Not coincidentally, we won that game.

Foot speed will do that to you.....guards have also been able to drive the lane at will this season. Gesell and Clemmons simply don't have the foot speed to stop dribble penetration and guard out to the 3-point line at the same time. They have to sag or they get beat. If they get in their face, the get the Trimble/Ferrell drive by.

This stuff is all too little too late. If these guys haven't figured it out yet it ain't gonna happen.

This is what concerns me about a Christian Williams/Connor McCaffrey point guard future. I will take a Ferrell/Lester/Woolridge type point guard over a tall, rangy, slow guy any day.

Mac McCausland had this nugget on a radio show about a month ago. He thinks the roster will change before next fall (implying transfers) and he feels we need to get a PG who is quick and can play defense. He wasn't impressed with our current options. I agree. And being able to shoot from outside would be OK too. ☺

Nothing gets a team jacked up like reeling off 2 or 3 straight three's. It's a total momentum changer. Preventing the 3 and giving layups instead at least keeps things from getting out of control.

Christian Williams is not slow and neither is Gesell for that matter. Gesell just can't shoot. I put very little stock in what Mac McCausland thinks.

They are not slow compared to the average Joe. They are slow-footed compared to Yogi, Melo and a lot of other points out there.

And I feel this is a lot of what's missing from our team offensively.. We don't have guards that have an easy time getting into the lane. MG tries it, and he often turns the ball over or his shot gets swatted. Otherwise, just a lot of dribbling around on the perimeter, so we don't seem to get a ton of open looks.

Wouldn't hurt if we had guys who could finish around the rim consistently, either. Just a ton of missed layups in that Illinois game. That really cost us, probably at least 8-10 points, which could've easily been the difference in the game.

Everyone seems to be late closing out on shooters.

I realize Woodbury is hedging on those high ball screens, but he seems to get caught right below the free throw line in no man's land. i am not an expert on basketball X and O's so I do not know if it is a lack of communication between him and the guards or who is suppose to do what......Seeing that frustrating look on Woodbury's face is getting old as he watches the shot drop from top of the key or someone blow by for an uncontested layup.

This is a huge issue and I think played a part in Woody struggling so much this year. He's running around outside the 3 point line and isn't able to get back in time anymore. His legs are toast right now and that is potentially impacting his already below average ability to finish and shoot free throws.

Williams can play off his man a lot more and still contest shots. That will help for any lack of quickness he may or may not have.

I guess what do you prefer? The other team's inside players hitting layups or guys shooting threes. Woodbury can't handle a guy that can put it on the deck and Jared has a had time defending a good post.

I would prefer as an opponent drives toward the basket that the hawk who is guarding him does it alone trying to force a bad shot or no shot. I dont like to see all this help defense when their teammate is not beat.

Usually as the opponent drives in there will be a the hawk center and another big man there to help. And that is the time to have good rotation defense.

Well, guess I'd rather give up 2 than 3.. There's the extra point, but made 3's really jack up a team, and their fans.

Ideally, gotta stop that dribble penetration. Suppose we need quicker, more athletic perimeter defenders for that.

How does Iowa rank as a team in blocked shots??

I know Uthoff does well individually and Woody is ok as a space eater but is not a rim protector and we dont have a true back up 5.

Point being it makes it more difficult on the guards if they don't have some guys that can slow down the drive if they do give up penatration and leads to requiring more help from other guards and giving up the 3s.

I watched a game not long ago where the defensive team did a pretty good job, but also gave up some open three's when they adjusted toward the driver off the point or off the wing. They also gave up some easier buckets underneath when the adjusted to penetration. Trying to think which team that was...oh, yeah, I remember! It was about 25 different teams that I watched this year in BT basketball.
