Quick Pick: Iowa Hoops Prediction

Iowa released it's 2013-2014 basketball schedule today and I dare say it is the most talked about Iowa hoops schedule in nearly a decade.

Eight of Iowa's 18 Big Ten games will be televised on an ESPN Network, including six on either ESPN or ESPN2. Additionally, the Hawkeyes will have at least one CBS appearance (at Ohio State on Jan. 12). The Big Ten Network’s television schedule will be released at a later date, but that is half of Iowa's slate not on the BTN, which has doubled as the Iowa Basketball Network in recent years.

The World Wide Leader thinks the Hawks are back, and we know three of Iowa's games will be on Super Tuesday ESPN telecasts.

Here is a very, very quick stab at picking Iowa's record, with expected wins in bold. I reserve the right to change this before the start of the season, but this is what stuck out to me with some comments below.

11/08/13 vs. UNC-Wilmington 8:30 PM
11/10/13 vs. Nebraska-Omaha 3:30 PM
11/14/13 vs. Maryland Eastern Shore 6:00 PM
11/22/13 vs. Penn TV 6:00 PM
11/28/13 vs. Xavier 6:00 PM
11/29/13 Tennessee/UTEP

11/30/13 TBD
12/03/13 vs. Notre Dame 8:15 PM
12/07/13 vs. Drake
12/09/13 vs. Fairleigh Dickinson 6:00 PM

12/13/13 at Iowa State 8:30 PM
12/22/13 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff 1:00 PM
12/31/13 vs. Nebraska 6:00 PM

01/05/14 at Wisconsin 6:30 PM
01/09/14 vs. Northwestern 8:00 PM
01/12/14 at Ohio State TBA
01/19/14 vs. Minnesota 12:00 PM
01/22/14 at Michigan 6:00 PM
01/25/14 at Northwestern 11:00 AM
01/28/14 vs. Michigan State 6:00 PM

02/01/14 at Illinois 6:30 PM
02/04/14 vs. Ohio State 6:00 PM
02/08/14 vs. Michigan 1:00 PM
02/15/14 at Penn State 12:00 PM
02/18/14 at Indiana 8:00 PM
02/22/14 vs. Wisconsin 11:00 AM
02/25/14 at Minnesota 6:00 PM
03/01/14 vs. Purdue TBA

or 03/02/14 vs. Purdue TBA
03/06/14 at Michigan State 8:00 PM
03/08/14 vs. Illinois TBA
or 03/09/14 vs. Illinois

That's 11-2 in the non-conference (there is still a game to be added, but a cupcake) and 10-8 in the Big Ten. There is certainly room in the Big Ten schedule for a win or two. Such as sweeping Penn State and Illinois. I think PSU is going to be salty this year and Iowa has won once or twice in Champaign since 1987. I have Iowa losing at Iowa State and going 2-1 in Atlantis.

With the type of RPI Iowa will have, I think a 21-10 record would lead to a six seed in the NCAA tournament. Adding two to three more wins in this slate is hardly impossible and if Iowa got to 24-7, you're looking at a four-seed at worst if not a three.

Hawks only play Penn State once.

They also lost one of their higher scoring guards they thought would be back, Marshall I believe is his name.

He was going to play pro in Europe but then decided to transfer to ASU and will get to play immediately.

I would have had the game at PSU as a loss with him, now I would put it as a win.

They indeed lost Marshall, but pick up Tim Frazier, a first-team all-conference player before he hurt his leg last year and missed almost the entire year. If he's 100% healthy by conference season, he will improve PSU a great deal. They could have been quite dangerous with both Frazier and Marshall, but will still be improved this year. Iowa hung on for dear life in winning at PSU last year. Every road win this year is likely to be similar.

Thats a big if coming off an injury like an achillees. Frazier and Newbill are nice pieces and I think they would have been a bubble team with Marshall.

I still like Iowa's chances in Happy Valley.

Also, last years game at PSU will have nothing to do with this years game out there.

Penn St does have Pitt transfer John Johnson eligible this season after sitting out last year and the scooped up Allen Roberts, a double digit scorer for Miami (OH) last year who is eligible to play immediately. They should be very solid in the backcourt but weak up front. They do have a very raw 7 foot transfer from SMU eligible this season too.

Exactly....not a pushover, but their frontline will be Reid and the Euro guy....not deep at all. Newbill is tough, and Frazier might be back, we will see, but Marshall is a huge loss for them. Iowa should win this game. John is lowballing them at 10-8. Iowa will beat Minny twice, and Wisky twice. I see 13-5 or 14-4 in the league. Iowa will beat ISU also. I expect a 3 seed in the tourney.

Not liking the Clown game, eh JD? I think we pull one out over there in Lames. If we are sitting at 6-7 in the conference that Wisky game becomes real huge. Plus, if we're sitting at 6-7 I wonder how many folks will think it's been a disappointing year so far?

If Iowa is sitting at 6-7 in the B1G through 13 games it will have been a disappointing year up to that point.

Fran has carefully chosen, from the players available, those who are intelligent team players who pass first and most are adept at passing. Their team mentality has increased every year and I believe this season it will increase exponentially. Their defense has become better each year also and the substitution pattern last season, while I scratched my head on several occasions, has fatigued the opponents on several occasions giving us the win. I also believe the substitution problem for opponents win increase this season. And the addition of Uthoff and Jok will help our offense tremendously. We gained a ton of experience last season and a lot in Europe this Summer. Lastly, I believe Josh O will fulfill his potential this season. I am ready for the beating I will take for that last statement. Let the season begin, I can't wait.....

I think we're more likely to be swept by Michigan than MSU. With the way both games went last season, I have a hard time seeing us losing two to Sparty this time around..

I went back and forth with the MSU game in Carver. I hate our chances in East Lansing.

I just don't see why can't we win in Lansing?I just recently traveled to Detriot and had long talk with one of my friends .They think MSU will be swept

There are a lot of times we get blown out in East Lansing, but win at Carver the same season. However we have been playing them very well there lately except for the beat down two years ago. Payback for destroying them at Carver the year before. The most humiliating game of the year for them. After the game one of the Spartans, hanging his head said: We lost to Iowa......

I have a harder time seeing us losing two to anyone else. MSU may be the best team we play, definitely the best team we play twice.
