Quick notes on D

So finally had some time to watch the Hawks play.

Our D is brutal. The guards sagging to help interior is nauseating to watch. Tonight’s game has been a good clinic on how not to play team D.

Example 1: 18 min mark dude dribbles down court for fOSU picks up dribble at top of key and #2 drops and looks to help interior. fOSU drains a 3.
Example 2: 16:30 mark. Pick and roll and 2 is once again caught in no man’s land and tries to slap at cutter but leaves his guy wide open on the wing. Pick and roll scores but wtf is he thinking?

Example 3: 15:15 mark. #2 once again drops to help inside leaving his man wide open at top of key for an easy 3. Dembele standing in the paint not guarding a soul and #2 and #4 in no man’s land once again.

That’s all within the first 5 mins of the game.

If you watch how the D sets up, any decent coach can identify that wing D is setup to help interior and leaves their man wide open on any dribble penetration.

Makes no difference if ball is strong or weak side, they sag leaving wing shooters wide open.

fOSU coach is smart enough to set a back screen on the sagging wing defenders but they haven’t been able to get the all to the wing shooter yet. I bet that will change.

Appreciate the technical breakdown but you could've ended after 2nd sentence and gotten 100% agreement.;)

Our football and basketball programs are inverse mirrors of each other. Fran has no clue how to coach D and KF is allergic to competent offenses. Neither has any semblance of balance. My eyes prefer the offensive style of play, but KF wins more. Both are painful to watch at times. A lot of times.

You've precisely described what Fran teaches as "being connected" together on defense.
As opposed to "being connected" to the opponent.

The extremes of how bad Frans defenses can be is so bad... They've gone stretches where the other team has scored like 9 straight possessions. What can be more demoralizing then that? We haven't been able to force a lot of TOs so if you're not able to do that give up open looks and can't get rebounds that's a recipe for getting your ass kicked most nights...

The bad D has never really bothered me, but it is intensely magnified when you have such a rebounding discrepancy like the Hawks are facing - look at the 17th ranked rebounding team in the B1G and then look up Iowa's. There's a HUGE gap between 17 and 18 and a fucking canyon between #1 and #18. IMO, this is why this team has been a little worse then some of Fran's other bubble teams. Most of them had bad defense too but weren't getting crushed on the glass. D is bad this year, it's not as bad as our rebounding effort.

Yeah it's just not something teams can overcome. Having to score north of 90 every dang game is unsustainable too when you play against good teams. It's been 5 games in a row we haven't even hit 80 pts. With some clunkers under 70 in there. We gotta be hitting damn near 80 on our worst nights to have a snow balls chance to be in games it seems like. To me that means team is getting down on themselves some...

I think it's gonna get worse partially due to schedule and also due to morale going straight down. I'll be impressed if Fran can get them to fight down the stretch but since he's seemed checked out it seems like I don't see it happening

But, we still watch

It is a curse: Hawkeye Forever

I do believe they will keep fighting down the stretch

Doesn't mean they will win any of the games, we win if our threes are falling usually

When both Peyton and Dix are off, we usually win Sometimes

I keep screaming at the screen DIX, shoot the damn ball

Freeman is a bright spot on the team, but is limited on D and rebounding

Fran should be looking for an enforcer in the paint

Wish I shared your optimism. From what I've seen so far it just looks like the beginning of the snowball effect. It's tough to stop that and it'd be a tough thing to do for a coach that gave a damn and was coaching for his job. But Fran seems to not be all in. So I'd like to see us win some games we shouldn't on paper and maybe ruin somebodies BIG tourny visit. But I just have a tough time envisioning that. We'll see how Feb goes.

I mean at his age he is probably thinking of leaving and he isn't getting fired in season so perhaps he doesn't think he needs to fight for his job. Might just be coming to grips and finishing it out?
