Is the power to hand out 50 million dollars to a football coach over a really long period of time (10 years) and with exorbitant buy out provisions relegated to one man? (Barta) Are there no checks and balances to guard against really stupid decisions? Someone in the know please enlighten me as to how this process works. Thank you.

I agree there should be something, but I doubt there is.

Hell, I would think there could be a phone app to do it. Start with a list of success measurables - overall record, conference record, final national ranking, etc. Assign a weight to each factor to get a final score. Then, get a list of "comps" - coaches with similar scores. Their contracts would give you some pretty solid, objective comparison data.

You really have to wonder, why? I mean was Ferentz really going anywhere if they didn't up the contract? Doubt it at this point.

Pretty sure he would've needed someone to outbid his Hawkeye contract. I want to see all these teams that were OFFERING him more money?

The checks and balances are certainly there. The President of the U. of Iowa, who is a business man, and the Board of Regents could change or stop the process at any point in time. The other check and balance is equally as important: The big donors to the athletic program carry a lot of weight when it comes to contracts for coaches...don't ever kid yourself. If you think KF does not have to make anyone happy except GB, you are really naive. I am not saying I agree with the contract provisions.

That is why I asked the question. So the correct answer is, there are more stupid people involved in the process than just the A.D. Makes me feel a lot better.

The huge donors signed off on any extension prior to any pen being put to paper.

I'm not arguing with you, but do you know this to be true? Big donors are actively involved in some of the decisions?

Having money to burn doesn't necessarily mean you're smart (no, not meant as a political commentary).

In the alternative, maybe they are very smart and know a lot of things you and I do not know. I try hard to look at both sides of the coin, though its tough with regard to this issue, admittedly.

the problem is, its not just about how the football team performs. Its about $$$$$, football and KF are cash cows for Iowa

My goal is to be rich enough in life to make really poor financial decisions and not have it affect me in the slightest.
