Question for those living out of Iowa

I still watch, but am always frustrated. When I watch other teams it's noticeable how childlike and undeveloped our players look compared to the big dogs. Nothing tops the Alford years IMO. Recker, Horner, Pierce, Evans, Boyd, Haluska, Brunner. Those were fun teams to watch.

---------I've resigned myself to the reality that it's a 99.999% likelihood that Iowa will never win a national title in football or hoops.

I think for those who live in areas of the country where titles are expected, that mindset eventually works on you to the point where you feel that should be expected....at lease ONCE every blue moon....with your team back in Iowa too....and excuses about being at a natural disadvantage start to wear your A out

---------Iowa has been a borderline top 25 team for the last 3 seasons - nothing lil ole Iowa about that.

What a LOSER mentality!!! Did we feel that way coming off the Final 8 appearance? Where BTW, I still believe we were the best team in the country, beating the eventual National Champion (Kansas) by 20.

I've never dropped out even when I lived out of state. This year I've stopped posting in the basketball game threads because it's all negative. Longtime nation posters seem to enjoy the negativity.

Jok can be shut down by talent...like a vault...

Only player that looks like he belongs on the court vs Purdue...Baer.

Uhl has eroded...

Game of HORSE for Purdue...

I am not a coach, but if I was Iowa's coach, I would encourage my players to get a hand in the face of the Purdue three point jump shooters. Might work to try something different.

I am confused...is this the Iowa vs Stanford Bowl game?

Plus...win or lose...I don't like to see Iowa teams playing without effort...or interest.

This total mismatch surprised me...perhaps I was listening to too much Jess Settles...

Men against boys...

I have to tell rev I'm sorry. He had 5 posts in the last game thread. He's brilliant at finding the positive.

Cook had two dunks underneath that were very impressive...

Iowa was 13-13 at the FT line...

Not much positive when the team was schooled...not all games are that way.

Just be as accurate in your language as your in depth research attempts to be...

"It is all negative, I never listen to it anymore." Hyperbole or stupidity...clean it up...

I've been in Dallas since 1986....as mentioned before, our Dallas Metroplex Iowa Club used to meet for Basketball watching from around 1985 until around 1998ish.....anyway, we would draw upward of 150-200 people....EVEN for the weeknite game. But we TOTALLY disbanded a couple years into Alfraud's campaign, and we have never banded back together for Basketball. Football watching is still going strong. I bet that I haven't watched 10 Iowa Basketball games from beginning to finish in the last 12-13 years. I am numb to the brand, numb to the poor coaching and the same repetitive shortcomings and mental mistakes, and numb to the type of un-athletic players that are thrown out onto the court and asked to try and pull off some "Hoosiers" movie miracle every year. If I didn't like Football so much, I can't swear that I'd be saying pretty much the same thing for it too. I guess my question is for those who have been out of state for a number of years...hell, or in state for that matter....has Iowa Basketball become a total afterthought for you as well?

No

I've been out of state from 81-86, 93-97 and I have had no problem with 'my' team, just the whiny ass 'fans' that think it's all about 'them' and their little feelers......"boo hoo, everyone let me down and made me feel bad about myself because they didn't live up to my expectations. waaaaaa......Shut up, you bunch of grazers!
Pathetic.....

I don't cry about Iowa Basketball or lose sleep over it....because I very seldom watch it. I pretty much know every year what to expect.....even during the "nice" seasons, I fully expect us to get schooled by the "real" programs. And we do. What IS pathetic, is ONE Sweet 16 appearance in 18 years!!!

Isn't this post crying about Iowa basketball? You seldom watch though...carry on.

Iowa just got blown out and schooled by a very good Purdue team...there is a thread debating about whether Iowa is the worst BB team in the conference....there is lamenting on this board and everywhere else at times...on-line or at the cafe or pub...

But, oddly, for some reason...I am excited about this team because it seems to offer some talent and hope for the future...considering also some of the future recruits.

In spite of losses...I enjoy watching Pemsl and Baer especially...tacticians...and Cook's raw ability is a treat...

And Brett B...looks like a beached whale...get on a program coach...and stick to it...you need to look fit and trim when you apply for the Iowa job...

Iowa hoops is not an afterthought for me. I moved from Iowa in '97 and have lived in Colorado and Oklahoma. Lackluster tried his best to ruin Iowa hoops but (somehow) Barta was smart enough to sh*tcan him and hire Fran. Fran is an excellent coach and he is bringing in very athletic players. So, while Iowa will always have to pull a "Hoosiers" to win something big, they won't be doing it with un-athletic players. Next years hoops team is going to be fun to watch.

I'm pretty sure if you go back and look at Quality of Life/Happiness Index ratings in Iowa from '81-'86 and '93 -'97, they were probably the highest ratings ever.

Even the "nice" teams are hard to watch....you know with certainty that when you go up against a real program, we will get patted on the head and sent out the living room to eat on the card table with our other cousins....while the grownups eat in the dining room, and then go on to make noise in March and April. Our bar in Basketball has been lowered just like it has in football....only it's not quite as noticeable.

Ever heard of ANF (the helmet stickers?) and what happened in the 80s and continued in the 90s? Iowa's population declined then. In the 90s it was -5%. Tough times. Des Moines lost something like 9% then. Remember the slogan? Last person leaving turn the lights out?

What year(s) was the bar lowered? In football was is '86, '87, late 90's, mid 00's, maybe '12, or was it in the late 50's?

In Bball was the bar lowered after Lute? Maybe Mr. Davis's final years, the Lich era, or is it under Fran?

I'm seriously curious when exactly the bar was lowered?

Whenever it was, how we gonna get that sumabitch back up where it belongs!?!

I've only been out of state for a couple years but Iowa basketball is what I live and breath. I love the football team too but if last season hadn't happened they would be a complete afterthought. Despite his issues, Fran has taken Iowa to three straight NCAA tournaments, and when you're in the NCAA tournament, anything can happen. Get hot at the right time and you're hanging a national championship banner in Carver. With football the season is over after the first loss. Even this year, there is always the hope that we win the conference tournament and then who the hell knows? That doesn't exist with football.

edit: to be clear, I don't expect Iowa to win a national championship in basketball, but look at UConn in 2014, they entered the tournament as a 7 seed, ranked #25 in kenpom and won it all. There is always hope.

As someone else has noted, this group is fun to watch. Am eager to see them grow. Hope Fran can keep them together the next 2-3 years and bring in more like them.

Great comeback win today against Wolfies. Especially liked the way the Iowa players were hugging each other afterwards. Seemed very genuine and the sort of thing that will foster a stronger sense of team in future games and years.

Chemistry:

When a team has it, it can elevate itself above what is expected. Not a fan of Minny but they won their bowl game becuz those players came together. (pun intended)

When a team doesn't? Well I remember a certain Hawkeye team beating a Gators squad full of prep All-Americans 37-17. Nuff said.
