Question for Jon

Hey Jon.

I was just wondering why you aren't a bigger part of the recruiting news in this forum? The recruiting board is just filled with other people and you chime in sometimes with information. I was just wondering as it seems on these boards the "Big Wigs" have interviews, more detailed articles, etc. Anyways, it was just a question after I noticed this about the site. Didn't know if it just wasn't one of your interests or what.

Recruiting has never been a passion for me, with regards to the process. For every well spoken kid I would call, the next ten would be 'normal' 17 year olds :) just not very talkative...In the 11 years I have been doing this, and 10 years as a part of Rivals (pre 2000 dotcom crash and post) and Scout, I felt that most recruiting items were hit and run efforts...five or six sentences wrapped around three or four paragraphs of filler.

It was one of those things where the higher ups demanded it be done, so I did it as I didn't have the means to strike out on my own and was also under contract.

In the summer of 2009, I initiated contact with Scout.com that I wanted to break away and do my own thing. While I cannot go into details of our amicable separation, I gave assurances that my desire to do the recruiting grind was non existent. And that is a big part of what they do to generate revenues.

I do have an interest when people commit, I do have an interest when big names are coming to campus (see the front page right now), and I enjoy writing about that and going out to find free content and videos and aggregate them here so that folks can learn about them and see them without having to fork over $$.

For some, they enjoy the entire recruiting process and dont mind paying for it. Hey, whatever works for you...I have no problem with that.

All this being said, the recruiting process does matter to people, and it's why I have been sitting on a recruiting database concept for a few years, one that is free and one that serves as a central hub of free information on prospects that schools are recruiting.

I am in the beginning stages of forming a partnership with a company that can actually build that concept into reality...and once it becomes a reality, I think a lot of people around here are going to find it very interesting, informative and exciting.

But at the right time...I have learned patience in my older age...but I think 2011 will be the year that this long held concept, and a few others, see the light of day. It will be a lot of fun.
