Question for a Badger

I haven't had any trouble with it. Even when you were kicking our butts year after year. It's always been a program I respected for its toughness. Haven't always felt the same about the basketball program. I might come around eventually. ;)

You guys have always had the same walls to climb as Wisconsin. Just on the outside and wanting to get in.

Alvarez is an Iowa boy so I understand why you love Iowa.

Much of that talent was going to programs like Iowa, Nebraska, UM, and even Texas. Marquette and Iowa in basketball. Where do you think Johnson and freddie Brown came from? Actually, Dave McClain had us going in the right direction until his untimely death, but certainly the school's President Shalala's increased emphasis on sports, the hiring of Richter as AD, then his hiring of Alvarez and Ryan were significant. . Alvarez had little to nothing to do with the hiring of Ryan.

True.

But he's keeping the train chugging in the right direction. The day he steps down will be a dark one for Wisky.

I've never been able to do that with another rival in any sport, but I haven't lived in both states.

And, I can't root for Iowa State.

LOL, my brother played football for ISU, but I've never been a big fan of them. Even lived in Ames for a couple years. Root for them though against anybody outside of the B1G. Root for Iowa in any game that won't have a negative affect on Wisconsin's standings.

The issue is KF has been here 18 years. There is a certain level of fatigue that is involved with that long of tenure. Barry Alvarez had up years and down years. Barry won 10 games in year 4, but then fell right back to 7, 4, 8, and 8 win seasons before going on a three year run of 11, 10 and 9 wins. He then dipped back to 5, 8 and 7 wins before winning 9 and 10 and then becoming AD.

When you coach as long as they did/have there are ups and downs over 16 or 18 years. Some don't feel that a coach who wins 7 or 8 games isn't doing a good enough job, the program is settling for mediocrity and have a shit fit all around. Yet Barry only exceeded 8 wins 6 times in 16 years. 10 times he won 8 games or less.

You really can spin those numbers for KF.

In his last 10 years as UW head coach Barry averaged 8.5 wins a year and won two Rose Bowls. Most of his rough years came during the rebuilding process in his first 6 years.

How's this? Record in bowls:

BA: 8-3 (3 Rose Bowl wins)
KF: 6-8 (1 Orange Bowl win)

Since Barry left (05) UW has even soared to new heights:

UW: Averaging 9.9 wins per year
Iowa under KF: Averaging 7.8 wins per year

Barry's record is what it is. Never said it wasn't good, just said it ebbed and flowed like most head coaches who are at a school for 15+ years.

Talk about spinning though, Barry averaged 8.5 wins over his last 10 years. Ferentz has averaged 8.2 wins over the last 16 years.

Like I said the number are what they are.

Actually this is enlighting. You IMO rely on the glory years of KF Iowa football 02-04 to prop up your opinion of KF. Everyone is entitled to thier opinion I suppose. I personally am more of a what have you done for me lately person, and feel the game has passed KF by.

Since '04 KF is averaging 7.75 wins a year and is 3-7 in bowls.

Our neighbors to the northeast are averaging nearly 10 wins a year over that span.

If you can't see why some people are upset with this, it's not really worth discussing.

Northwest? Is that Montana? ;) One thing that should be noted about Wisconsin's record during the Bielema years. Our OOC games were bird doodoo soft so we were almost guaranteed to start the conference season with 3 or 4 wins. Since his departure, we've played a more challenging schedule.

I haven't really analyzed Iowa's OOC, I'm hearing that yours has been soft as well, but at least you have played ISU each year.

How about you take the clown game so we can move on to better games.

Whoops. Typing too fast.

Ya Barry and Biels had pretty weak non conference schedules but at least they won those games. We've had weak schedules and usually drop at least one to a team we shouldn't...

My favorite out of town game to go to is Iowa. I love taking the shuttle from the Mall to the stadium. Iowa fans always give you a razzing going. If the Badgers win, you get to turn the tables a bit. ALL GOOD NATURED. And there's a nice Bar and Grill on the other end of the trip to soak up your disappointment or puff up your chest a little with a victory.

Kudos to you for the kind words about Iowa City and the Hawkeye fans. I echo those exact same words about my trips to Berkley..sorry, I mean Madison.
but DAMMIT why does your comment cause my selective memory to kick in and bring my @ss right back to that awful day when you fake punted us at Kinnick, which kept your winning drive alive.
That one still stings.

Barry's weren't too bad. He generally had at least one "P5" team on it and at least one other decent team (teams like Fresno State, BYU, SDSU) and a MAC team. The schedule was good enough to fill the stadium.

We somehow dropped or postponed into posterity most of the P5 games we had scheduled under Bielema. I think we might begin playing them in 2020 or something like that. ;)
