Question About McCaffery's Career

What's up with the break between Lehigh and UNC-Greensboro?

I'm not trying to invite rampant speculation. I'm just curious.

He's the youngest head coach in D-1 at Lehigh. He takes his team in year three to the NCAA tournament.

He then leaves to become an assistant at ND for 11 years?

Maybe the job market was different back then for coaches, but it seems unlikely that a coach would choose that sort of path today.

I think it is a valid question, and I know you are not trying to stir the pot. I think the market was much different, as you alluded to. An assistant position at ND probably paid more than the head coach at Lehigh, and it still may. Also, you are more likely to get recognized there too than at Lehigh? I am just throwing things out there. I really have no idea.

I bet he thought he was going to get the HC job at ND some day. He also met his wife there. The problem is he worked under McLeod, who eventually got fired.

So the question is, "Why did you stay so long at ND?" It is a legit question. That being said, it is good he was able to find a HC job when things went south for McLeod at ND.
