Quarterback of Today

Is mobile and extends plays with his feet and makes key plays when needed running the ball. Not just college but the Pros are now going to that type. Kansas City and now Arizona just 2 examples. Ferentz just never recruits that type of player. Kind of fell in to one with Banks and see how that ended!
Petras is the Ferentz standard. I can not remember a play he made with his feet in the Northwestern game? I realize we are piling on him but I guess that's football

Before I put it all on the QB I want to mention another worthy candidate Brian Ferentz. We can't block anyone running the ball Our receivers aren't getting wide open and in general our offense is really bad. Just don't think it's all talent as I think we have some I think it's mostly the offensive concept and Brian Ferentz.

I think he will be coaching tight Ends in the NFL next year

C.J Beathard was a fairly mobile QB. Nate Stanley was a decent mobile QB. Both are in the NFL. Players also need to be held accountable for their play on the field. Missing blocking assignments, Fumbling the ball, dropping passes, missed or bad tackling. That’s has a lot to do with the play on the field. And now one of the senior leaders on the team gets an OWI this weekend.

I've heard stories from nearly twenty years ago, when Iowa had a Heisman runner-up who played just like that. Something of a legend now, really. Can anyone confirm?

If it turns out Petras has one speed for all throws, I think he's not the guy. Looking at film, I'm confident coaches are telling him on this 10 yard out we don't need a 100 mph heater high and hard. By the 3rd game if he can't settle in and throw some touch passes, I want to see what the back up has.

This is the reason last year I kept wanting to keep Peyton as part of the offense in some fashion, (wildcat, short yardage) to keep him from transferring. I do believe if he was brought into either game to spell Petras, Iowa wins both games. He probable would be out starter now. He must have felt he was never part of Brian's plans. I know players don't stay anymore, but man it's nice to have some options.

Banks, Stanzi, and Beathard are the three Ferentz era QBs that still really jump off the page at me. Tate is maybe an honorable mention based on his knack for dramatics, but I don't think he had the tools of the other three. All those three had amazing touch. They threw really nice balls and knew when it was time to sling it and when putting some air under it was called for.

Hit the nail in the head. Starting College qbs are almost always athletic, dual-threat. Now, even many of the up and coming pro ones are too. Never at IA it seems. Run your program, inside and out, at every level, like it’s 1980. Really starting to catch up with us

We keep talking about the psyche of what would happen if we were to pull our QB for poor play, but tend to forget about the backups. What about the #2 guy standing there on the sidelines, knowing that the starter simply doesn't have it that day, and knowing that he's busted his ass just as much to get his opportunity only to continue to stand there. It's no wonder why some guys transfer for PT... They're all gamers but I think it's blatantly obvious that its not competing for a starting spots that has them leaving but simply the fact that they want to see the field in some way, shape, or form.

My guess is KF prefers the bigger stronger pocket QBs due to hopefully they don't get injured as much as the mobile ones... It's tougher to have QB depth at a school like Iowa so having a Nate Stanley start for 3 yrs strait is ideal... He was banking on Petras being the same I suppose.

Kirk never, ever, works on having a capable back-up QB. He will play a starter in a blow-out (once in a blue moon) into the fourth and put in the back-up to hand the ball off and kill the clock. Seasons when we have been out of the bowl picture he started senior QB's. He almost never gives his back-ups any real playing time. It might be an attempt to be able to say "poor me" my QB doesn't have any experience so it's not my fault if we lose. That's why we have no experience at QB right now. This is his doing.

Oh there's no doubt it's all on him. It's probably an older school way of handling QBs. I'm not a fan of it either. I'm not sure what the right balance is of trying to develop a backup qb but safe to say KF after all these years hasn't figured that out yet

The biggest evidence of this was in 2012 when Rudock didnt take a single snap and we were bad. JVB had a terrible year in Greg Davis' first year as coordinator.

That year was 100% on Greg Davis. JVB went from 25 TDs to 7. Of course we lost McNutt, but when a kid like JVB throws it left and the WR broke right, you know damned well it was the insane Davis option route tree read that caused the problem. That offense was seriously as insane as handing over the keys to Ferrari to a 16 year old boy the day he gets his drivers license.

The only year the offense was productive was when we had CJB running it and Brian was o-line coach and run game coordinator. The run game was really good that year and CJB had the talent to make up for the shitty strategic offense.
