Quarterback Draw

Can someone please tell me why we have more trouble stopping this than most teams. Not just this team either because in the past we never could stop it and teams just light us up.Very Frustrating to watch

We gave up one big play because Morris just put his head down and ran into a defender so he wasn't in the box. Other than that we didn't really have trouble stopping it.

If you haven't read all the other threads in the last day or so it is because our Dline is horrible and LB's should be playing flag football. Oh yeah and our safety is a hugger not a tackler.. I think those are the reasons why.

61 year old Dan Fouts could scramble for 8 yards against us. Overall, we have had consistently fine D's, so not trying to bash here, but yeah, containing mobile QBs has been a huge problem in the Ferentz era. The only time I remember us doing well (I am sure there have been more...I don't have the best memory), was in the Orange Bowl against GT. I remember thinking before we played that game that we'd do well in that matchup, because we had several weeks to prepare for their gimmick option O. But yeah, it's hard to watch. I am surprised more teams don't exploit this.

Are you kidding me? NIU picked up key first downs on a few occasions in the 1st half with it.

I counted 4 times they picked up big yardage before the TD.This isn't any thing new and with Ia St coming to town we better be prepared for it because they have done it to us in the past with success.

And they ran for all of 140 yards. Yeah it's not great but it's not bad considering NIU is a running team that threw the ball like 12 times.

Just ask yourself how an attacking, aggressive team like alabama or lsu would defend against NIU. They would be crashing down their D-ends with the occasional corner and outside linebacker blitz. Their gap coverage would be very good and when the QB hesitates the guys crashing down would clobber him.

Have you ever seen iowa play defense much like that. No even when we had the athletes .

I thought we would see more aggressive play in the NIU backfield yesterday.

When a team goes empty (no backs) against the Hawks, Iowa has a tendency to have 4 in the box. Automatic check for QB draw for most teams. Its 5 OL on 4 DL...hard to win that consistently. On the long TD, we had 4 DL and Morris in the box. Even that puts us even up in the box, if all 5 OL get their block...we lose. Even if you blitz off the edge you can lose this battle as the draw is inside and the blitz can come up empty...and leave you with one less down field to make the tackle. This is the same way we've defended it in the past (no or one LB in the box), and teams have hurt us with it. ISU did last year, and most likely will again this Saturday.

This is where I think Iowa is blowing it with Morris. In the past he has been much more effective trying to make plays in the backfield by shooting a gap than reading and reacting.

Plus, that is a good way to overcome issues with a weak line.

So far, Phil Parker looks like the same coach that was running the D when Norm was out in 2010. Remember, the D that had all the NFL players that couldn't get off the field on third down?

aggressive? aggressive? I thought getting rid of norm was a sure sign of more aggressive things to come. btw, iowa ran a lot of man, a lot of different things yesterday, but i'm guessing you never noticed all the different looks when norm was coaching, so why waste my breath. or in this case, key strokes.

and really, you are comparing this iowa team to alabama, lsu? have you seen our DL? We've had those type defenses, but this is not going to be one of those years.

didn't pay that much attention to the line, but it looked like we were pinching down there in the fourth to eliminate that up the middle stuff.

on the TD play, Morris made a bad read and got gobbled up and the safety took a hard/bad angle and missed the tackle.

He wasn't comparing Iowa's defense to Alabama or LSU, he was saying what aggressive defenses like theirs would do compared to what Iowa does. You took it out of context.

Did I say Iowa's Dee is akin to alabama and LSU, NO I DIDNT, you keystroke waster, haha.

I didnt see many blitzes or pressure schemes by iowa yesterday.

I think it is laughable when you say all the different looks NOrm showed, when in reality we had just a few looks in NOrm's scheme. If you tell me that norm ran a whole bunch of schemes then I know you really didnt watch Iowa Defense the last 13 years. Norm was great, leave it at that.

Glad someone else noticed how different some things were yesterday. Yesterday's defense was light years different than what Norm did, at least until Lowery went out. They played more, tighter man in those first two quarters than I ever recall under Norm. The safeties also dropped down in the box repeatedly, a couple times putting as many as 10, depending on formation (both safeties and Hyde when he didn't have anyone wide to his side). Hyde was also repeatedly put on an island, and generally held up fairly well. I thought they played much more zone when Castillo came in, but overall that was a monumentally more aggressive scheme, at least in terms of playing man and utilizing the safeties a lot more. There were also some good adjustments, namely the DE's crashing to meet the pulling OL/RB that was occupying them and letting the QB slip inside. Once the DE's started crashing harder closing that hole, the QB runs got tougher for Lynch as he had to bounce more. Many of Lynch's initial gains he was stacked up at the line but kept his feet going and squirted through gaps. He was a tough runner, but outside of the long TD run, he was bottled up the second half.

Better be prepared is right...further, most of those gains occurred with bad and missed tackles. I don't know if that is from being beat on the play, or just out of position...i don't think so much due to bad schemes, maybe bad reads (which will improve with game experience).

Either way, we will need to improve our tackling!
