Quality Scathing article on the S E C

Auburn extends SEC's BCS run despite Oregon's best efforts - Andy Staples - SI.com

"Over" signing, amongst other items, becoming more of a hot topic - thankfully.

Quote: "Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley is the SEC in microcosm. He's fast, strong, dominant. He can outmuscle a lineman, split a double-team and outrun a quarterback. Between the snap and the whistle, he usually is a joy to watch. But Fairley also grabs facemasks and hits late. His greatness, like the SEC's, has a dark side that occasionally overshadows the excellence."

The only bad part about this article is how far down you have to go to get the author's main point. Way past the attention span of the average internet news reader.

I don't hate the SEC, I pity them for they put winning ahead of integrity, honesty, and ethics. Qualities I would hope to instill in my children, and pray that the Hawkeyes always espouse.

I think i need to switch my go to sports source to si.com.

Agreed. Articles like this prove that true journalism is dead in this country. I am a capitalist, and understand the importance of profit as it pertains to creating opportunity, but when the sports world has the 800 pound gorilla known as ESPN in control of the vast majority of what is sports news, we all suffer. These kinds of activities should be front page but they get buried because they may alienate eyeballs watching Sports Center.

Instead, they run a story about two former Iowa football players who haven't had an affiliation with the team for some time.

I think big-time college athletes should pass a basic high school proficiency exam to play...some will probably call it racist, or something, but isn't it worse to have black guys who are not learning getting exploited for their athletic prowess and making tons of $ for colleges/NCAA?

Yeah, it probably is kind of racist, but you make a good point.

On what planet is that racist? Seriously? Is the fact that you have to have a HS Diploma to get in to college and play football racist? I guess I need to get a little black book of things that are racist. I have a feeling the "little" black book wouldn't fit in my house.

Why does it have to be a BLACK book?

J/k... playing on your passion :)

It's racist for stating it's only the black kids who are stupid. Most of the white athletes are dumber than a bag of hammers too.

if its racist to say that only black kids are stupid, what is it to say that 'most white athletes are dumber than a bag of hammers'??

Yes, definitely a racist statement, I am sure not intended. You are implying it is only "black guys". The statement is ignorant. You should have said "players" instead.
