Name any QBs that you think got better the longer they played for Kirk.
Nathan Chandler. Ricky Stanzi. Oh, sorry, I thought this was a real question, but I now realize you're making a point.
1) These are the only 2 that would be considered in the conversation.
2) Depends on definition of "got better" - statistically or play-making ability.
I would have agreed on Chandler but he only played 1 full season; sort of eliminates him from "getting better" when he had no baseline. That said, let's apply the criteria ...
- As a playmaker: He was nothing more than a game manager, so "playmaking" wasn't really expected. Still, he was very solid in that role, so, while he didn't improve, he also didn't regress.
- Statistically: Here are his stats. Technically / literally, he regressed.
Yr Class G Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int Rate
*2002 JR 5 12 / 20 60.0 161 8.1 9.1 1 0 144.1
*2003 SR 13 165 307 53.7 2040 6.6 6.4 18 10 122.4
Career 177 327 54.1 2201 6.7 6.5 19 10 123.7
Ricky went from Ricky-6 to a draftable QB from Jr to Sr. Significant improvement, both, statistically and intangibly (decision-making / performance).
Yr G Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int Rate
2008 13 150 254 59.1 1956 7.7 7.2 14 9 134.8
2009 11 171 304 56.3 2417 8.0 6.8 17 15 131.6
2010 13 221 345 64.1 3004 8.7 9.4 25 6 157.6
Career 542 907 59.8 7377 8.1 7.8 56 31 141.6
I will say this, though. I recall always watching him and feeling like he just didn't have "it" like he did his junior year. Still, I have to chalk that up to subjective observation that is (and always will be) clouded by the horrific disappointment of the 2010 season. I would have to say there's absolutely no doubt Stanzi "improved" during his career.
So, basically, under derKirkFer(avis) one QB has ever improved over his career at Iowa and, in that case, the team horribly underachived and disappointed.
