Putting the UNI Game into some Context

Anyone remember which B1G opponent UNI played in September of 2012? UNI ended up losing 26 to 21. If you guessed Wisconsin then good for you. Below is the box score from that game. The QB for UNI was Kollmorgan and the RB was Johnson. Wisconsin went on to a 4 and 4 record in the leaders division and thumped Nebraska in the conference championship game. OSU and PSU were not eligible due to probation. In 2013 UNI beat ISU. UNI was a veteran ball club at the important skill positions. Farley is a good head coach and knows Iowa's tendencies. The prior time Iowa played UNI it was much closer and required to blocked field goals to avoid a loss. That Iowa team went on to a pretty good season.

My opinion is that Iowa has some very intelligent players and has some seniors to lead the way on both side of the ball. To get by with so few penalties in the first game is very telling about the concentration of the two units. When you do not beat yourself with mistakes it makes the job of winning easier.

Yes very ironic that Johnson had a couple long scoring receptions yet didn't rush for much of anything.
Also, WI's rushing game wasn't all that great either (Ball had over 100 but needed a whole heap of carries to do it).

UNI is a very solid program and has been for 5-10 years. I thought their nose guard/big Dee tackle was really hurting our run game saturday but then he got hurt for at least a little while. Does anyone remember if he came back into the game?

I’d be 100x more worried if UNI had run the ball down our throats all day, rather than our new LB’s just getting mixed up in coverage which allowed UNI to stay close.

UNI kept burning them on a wheel route....Just like they burned Iowa 3x with the same play over the middle of the field. UNI is a well coached team. There is no shame in playing a close game against them.

We made BIG mistakes that can be cleaned up, UNI found a Madden Money Play and kept choosing it and we couldn't adjust. Iowa is very well coached so I don't expect this will be problem going forward

Always thought UNI was and is a very good program. Not worried about the D at this point. As has been stated over and over. The mistakes made on D can be corrected.

My skepticism with Iowa is and always has been on the offensive side. It's well known the Hawks are deeper in the skill positions then they've been for years and Rudock is a smart QB. Here's where the concerns are. Under this head coach no matter what the level of players there are, Iowa's tendency is conservative period. Most fans have accepted that and moved on.

My amazement is that some fans think the Hawks are going to magically and suddenly open things up at some point this year. Hope I'm 100% wrong on the following statement. It's not going to happen. It's not who Iowa football is.

UNI plays D1 teams tough. Iowa will be fine, they pulled out the W and that is all that matters at this point.

First off, Dee didn't return to the game but it looks like he'll be good to go vs. Hawaii in a week. UNI has been a solid program for more than 5-10 years. The Panthers have been a perennial MVC and I-AA/FCS powerhouse and in contention virtually every year since 1985. We (and I say "we" because I am an alum of UNI) were national runner-up in 2004, losing to Appalachian State 21-16 in the I-AA Championship game. I looked it up and Northern Iowa has 33 conference championships dating back to 1927. Lots of storied history in Cedar Falls.

This year's team could be on track to be one of the best UNI squads in school history. I wouldn't feel too bad about Iowa only "escaping" by a touchdown against these guys. They are going to go far this year and will hopefully be bringing a National Championship home to Cedar Falls. Iowa didn't play a cupcake... don't let the "FCS" beside the name fool you - the Panthers are a legit contender.
