Punting in opponent territory

Weird name drop without any follow up as to why.
Only a handful of fanbases outside the big ten might even get that reference.

The punting game is important. So that was a stupid line to put in there.
IDK, if it's 1 yard or 9 yards. If it's at the 49 or the 39. I think that plays into it. Not to mention if you have just gone 3 and out twice and you are down 3-0, do you go for 4th and 7 at the 48 yard line? I don't think so

^^^^^^^^
And I'm not saying go conservative either.
I'm just saying If going to the extreme one way and going for it every time is one extreme and never going for it is another extreme. I tend to find that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
The truth is probably pretty important, so that should be what we aim for.
Obviously extremes are constant, hence the meaning of the word.

Basically.

I can see punting between the 50 and 40 if it's 4th and 5+. Inside the 40 it better be something like 4th and 15+. More over...if you're inside the 40, you should integrate a 4 down strategy into your play calling.

You should never punt in the opponents territory. Never a win.

Yeah, easy for you to say since you dont have a contract as a P5 coach.

if you have 4th and 5 from the opponents 40+ yard line I would say punt especially knowing if your punter is real good kicking high punts about 40 yards. If you can pin your opponent on their 3 to 8 yard line gaining about 35 to 40 yards of field position that is huge compared to giving up momentum because your qb fumbles the snap and you lose 2 yards to their 46 yard line.

But so many variables as far as score, time of the game, how your offense and defense are performing, is it a high or low scoring game.

I think Kirk going for it on 4th down happens more often than this article gives him credit. A lot depends on the punter and his abilities and your faith in your defense. Kirk has gone for it more than people realize.

I think most reasonable fans get this. Punting from the fifty usually makes sense. Punting from the opp 35 almost never does, fourth and 8+ notwithstanding. The between depends on down distance and defense.

And of course, a FG kicker with range better be on the roster. 4th-and-15 from the 40 should have more options than "punt" or "try to pooch punt it".

This is the guy that my last post was based on.

Analytics say punting is a no win. But coaches and fans are brain washed

This is a perfect example of playing "not to lose". The perceived bad effect of a negative outcome is greater than the perceived benefit of a good one. Never mind what the numbers prove.
