Nice finally got him out of the National League, this is great for the Cubs. Would have been better to get him into Chicago however.
This proves just how good of a franchise the St. Louis Cardinals are.

My question is how is Fielder that big when he is a vegetarian?? It doesn't make any sense!Well, the Cubs still have the chance to land a good first baseman at the expense of another inner-division rival (Prince Fielder). So depending on where Fielder ends up, this could still end up working out really well for the Cubs.
That said, Fielder is another player I'd be concerned about offerring a long-term deal to, like beyond 5 years. You have to wonder how much that man will weigh five years from now.

I would love to see the Cardinals offer Fielder a 6-7 year deal in the neighborhood of $22 mil a year.
The Cardinals didn't pull the trigger on the 10 year Pujols deal because they are a smart franchise and have 11 WS titles to prove it. They will move on and win titles post Pujols just like they did pre Pujols. Its about the birds on the bat not who wears the jersey.
As resident Halos fan, I love this deal.
He will be solid for 5-6 years of this deal. Big Papi put up something like a .300/30/100 line as an out of shape 36 year old. I think AP can do at least that at 36, 37, 38.
Halos added 40m to the payroll this year, but take 40m off next year with guys they do not need to replace (Torii, Abreu, Kazmir, Taka)...they also are on the verge of signing a huge TV deal.
There is more to this than baseball. You are talking about someone who will go down as one of the games all time greats, a Hispanic player coming to a large Hispanic market. As he ages he is still a big ticket seller as he breaks records.

That could be a franchise-wrecking contract.
No offense Thunder but you do not understand the Halos situation then.
They were at 120M going into this off-season and jumped to 160M for 2012.
At seasons end they lose 40M in contracts of players who do not need to be replaced...and are back at 120M.
With the new TV deal they should easily be able to have an annual operating budget of 160M+. Potentially 40M to work with again next year...although I'm sure next year they will not spend much, but rather plug in some bench guys.
Look at 2013 FA class after the guys who will most definetly be extended...McCann, Youk, Wright, Cain? Nice players but they don't put butts in the seats like AP will...even at age 38. Angels had to jump now.

As a Cubs fan I was hoping he signed that long of a deal with the Cards.
There isn't a chance in hell he lives up to that contract. I give him 3 or 4 more good years and then the .260 with 15 HRs and 65 RBI's playing in under 100 games will kick in.
If I was a Cards fan I would be sad to see him go but happy as hell they didn't spend that money on him.
As a Cards fan you hit it on the head Hoffa. Living is St. Louis and getting to watch the Cards the entire season, AP has been on a little of a decline the past 2 years with some saying 3 years. Also, no way AP IS 31 soon to be 32. If he is a day under 35 that would be a miracle.
I see this as a huge win though for AP and for the Cards. The Angels will regret this monstrosity of a contract for many years. Now the Cards will have money to spend on other positions they need to fill.
Time to move on. The Cards were fine before AP and will be fine post AP.
As a Cards fan I'm relieved that we didn't hobble ourselves with that kind of bullsh!t. Dude is 32 (34?) years old.
