PTL Storylines

Nunge is at least 6'9. Looks like 6'10 to me. I think that is way to big for the 3 spot. Just saying.

As I've previously mentioned. Both Aaron White and Jarrod Uthoff played the "3" in their respective junior seasons. It's not so much about height as it is frame and footspeed.

What my post was really getting at is there is only 80 minutes to split between the 4/5 spots between 7 guys. It makes sense for at least one if not two of the bigs to compete for minutes at the 3, unless we are comfortable with Baer, Dailey, and Williams getting all 40 minutes there. In terms of skill set, I think Uhl & Nunge would be the most likely of the bigs to play the 3

Is it just me or do we have alot of talent now? It's funny...everyone is commenting on all these guys and I haven't seen anyone mention Ellingson, who had a couple of incredible shooting stretches last year. With our offense getting more diverse with Jok gone...forcing teams to defend all over the court...someone's going to get open look after open look. I think he's the perfect shooter off the bench and no one is even mentioning his name. Moss, Dailey, Bohannan, etc...but here is a proven shooter in B10 play. Just means we have alot of talent IMO,.

I get ya. I'm still leaning towards Uhl and Wagner getting some of the 3 minutes. Nunge is already a better looking shooter than Wagner so you may be right. Hell maybe teams will just let us play with 6 on the court. In the pursuit of fairness and all. We just have to many competent players to only be allowed to play with 5.

For sure. To many good options. I can't imagine how tough it's going to be for a coach with so many options. I imagine you would just be immobilized by indecision. There are 14 puzzle pieces and in some alignment there is a clear B1G championship picture. I sure hope Fran can put the puzzle together.

What are you looking forward to seeing most in PTL this year? There are plenty of storylines.

How good is Garza? Can he shoot 3s? Can he play defense?

How good is Nunge? Is he athletic enough to play the 3?

Can Williams, Cook, Pemsl, Wagner improve their jump shots? Free throws?

What is Moss focusing on improving on the offensive end?

Can Dailey find a role on next years team?

Can Bohannon improve his scoring inside the arc? Has his lateral quickness improved?

What is Baer looking to improve this offseason?

What intrigues you the most?

PTL is a great way to see raw skill sets and personalities more than anything else. Other than that I think you're grasping at straws to try and extrapolate some kind of scouting report.

Ball handling...
shooting technique...
speed...
quickness....
strength...
leaping ability....
positional moves...
personal repertoire...

basketball IQ...
Toughness...
aggressiveness....
confidence...

Keep your views general and I think you can learn a lot.

I'm not so concerned about our bigs. I think they are talented enough as a group to fill the available minutes. I want to see our guards, Williams, Dailey, Ellingson and, yes Moss, show that they have improved enough, both scoring the ball and on defense, that they won't be a weak spot.

You're not expecting Baer and Boyd...oops I mean Bohannon to carry the backcourt. Lol I'm just teasing. I would also like to see a "go to" SG emerge as well. Some solid development from our bench would be awesome too. I am most hopeful for Moss and Ellingson. 1 of them needs to step up. Both would be desired.

Moss makes a big leap this year, IMO. He now knows what it takes. He showed glimpses of brilliance last year, but was inconsistent. He's shown he has the drive to get better and the physical tools are all there. I love his upside.

I'm all for that. I agree Moss has the goods. He has got to put it all together though. That is a tough thing to do sometimes.

Once again, look at the roster. Consider that Nunge is certainly at Iowa to try and improve on Uthoff's footsteps. Whether anyone likes it or not, Fran has played Uthoff, White, even Zach McCabe at times at the 3. Fran favors length over athleticism. Some find that hard to reconcile with their own views on personnel but that's what he does.

Ya, I already conceded that the precedent had been set for it by past players, and that Nunge appears to be able to shoot well enough to pull it off. Still at 6'10 maybe still growing, Nunge would be the tallest SF I have ever seen at Iowa.

To me Moss is the most important player going into next year. If he can average 10-12ppg and be a consistent threat, I think we will have a strong year.

The second most important player to me would be Garza, as we need that interior defensive presence. I don't know if he's the guy for that but I'm hopeful.

FWIW, last year I said Williams and Uhl were the two most important players. Both had disappointing seasons however we had some others exceed expectations.

 Hopefully I didn't just jinx Moss and Garza.

I agree that if Moss averages 12ppg, in addition to what I expect from other returners, a strong team year will be expected. To get there, I think some defensive pressure has to be taken off of him. An interior defensive force that could come with a solid first year by Garza would help. Another consistent defensive perimeter presence could help also.

I'm sure the Iowa players are following Jok in his NBA pursuits. They should start to realize that developing their defense is going to be pretty important for the next level and earning a salary from basketball. There probably aren't a lot of players that can match Jok in pure shooting, but Moss seems to be pretty gifted. He should be able to overtake Jok in the defensive department. I think the whole team will probably be improved by just seeing how Joks ability to play defense will effect him at the next level. It could be that his high school knee injury has a permanent effect in his ability to play defense.

At best he is a role player that gives you 15 to 20 minutes a game. A definite value to the team, but I am not going to get crazy over BE. Now that CM is playing baseball I am more excited that CW is staying. If BE's role expands beyond backup 2 guard then it means Moss and Williams are struggling. And that ain't good.
