Brendan Stiles is the PTL champ two years and running..this is a great read and will get the rails greased for hoops...not that we need much help there.

I keep forgetting about Uthoff when I think rotations and the like....this is not the most talented team in the Big Ten, but it might be the deepest team in the Big Ten and there is a good deal of experience, too....

If Uthoff is even in the discussion of being the best player on the team by the time conference play starts, I think we will end up at worst a 4 seed and 3rd in the big 10.

I agree that there are individual pieces better than the Hawks. But in this case, the whole is better than the sum of the pieces.

GO HAWKS!!!

At least the 2 new bodies on the court are better at making shots. Judging by FG percentages for the returning players, Uthoff and Jok will need to knock down shots.

Stiles does a great job on PTL.

I love how well Uthoff shoots fts. Could win a an extra game or two

McCabe and Clemmons really put up some nice numbers from behind the arc. Jok was not bad in the mid 40's %

Three things that stood out to me. Gabe shot almost 70% from the field, Clemmons shot over %50 from 3, Myer went to the freethrow line 3 times.

The first is not incredibly surprising, but quite encouraging, the second is fantastic and the last one is almost unbelievable.

Not redshirting Gabe in retrospect was a huge mistake.

Just get excited thinking about the depth and possible rotations...

Our 2nd lineup includes players that Stiles described as the 2 most improved, the leader, and the spark of the bench.

Ogelsby shot five FT's in five games, Jok shot 37 in six games. I really hope Jok can play defense up to Fran's expectations because he could be a major offensive upgrade over Ogelsby.

Not only that, but think of what he can do matchup wise. Late in the game? Put in Gesell, Marble, Uthoff, Jok, and White to handle the ball, and make FT. Need and inside defensive presence? Put in Woody/Olesani and Uthoff or Basabe or White. Need to get to the rim? Put in AC, Marble, Jok. What to stretch the D? Put in Ogelsby, Jok, Uthoff and Gesell

So many matchup combinations that Fran can use to put pressure on the other team.

Great write-up. I can't wait for the season to begin!

It sounds like Uthoff (6-8), Woodbury (7-0), Marble (6-6), White (6-8), and Gesell or Clemmons are likely going to be the starters. That's an incredibly tall team and is going to create matchup nightmares for the opposing team. Throw in a quick PG like Gesell or Clemmons and that has the makings of a legit NCAA contender.

Off the bench you have Basabe, Jok, Olaseni, Clemmons or Gesell, and McCabe. That's 10 deep with depth at every position from 1-5 with little to no drop-off. Unbelievable job assembling a team by Fran.

I am glad reading the write up that I am not the only one that realizes gesell is a better pg than marble. My only worry is with gesell's injuries. But I could easily see him lead the league in assists and even set some Iowa records.

The Gazette had a story a couple months back that mentioned Uthoff has grown to 6'10". Also, White is also taller than 6'8" I believe.

I actually hope we see a lot of zone with this team. The length could cause nightmares for teams.

I think the zone was very effective down the stretch last year. Could be smothering with Iowa's depth. Bonus too in helping Gabe, and Woody with fouls.

I wouldn't discount the Man V Man either. While they might be a step slower, and some of the quicker players will be able to drive around Uthoff, or White, just keep in mind they then have to finish over Woody or Olesani.

I really, really like the make up of this team. I think Iowa could be a very tough team to match up against. Sure other teams might have quicker players, but how do they finish even if they get penetration? Plus this was a good defensive team last year. They lost a pretty good defender, but the rest of the team is back, and Uthoff won't be much of a drop off defensively at all from May.

But luckily Fran realizes that the team is better when Marble plays point.

Talent trumps everything, but if you can't be loaded with McDonalds All-Americans, this is the next best option. Iowa seems like they are built like one of those good mid-major teams that make a deep run in the tournament. It is not a diss on Iowa comparing them to a mid-major, nor am I saying Iowa will make a deep run in the tournament, but if you look at the recent mid-majors teams that have done well in the tournament they have been teams with similar makeup.

But luckily Fran realizes that the team is better when Marble plays point.

If you believe everything Fran says you would believe a lot of nonsense. The team is better with gesell at the point when he is 100%. The team was better with marble at the point late in the year because gesell was hurt. If he is 100% he is a much better pg than marble as a distributor and passer and ball handler and forcing the fast break and secondary break. He isn't the scorer that marble is but marble is a high volume shooter compared to gesell and therefore gesell is a more efficient scorer and player.

The team is at its best when it's best player is at his best and he's at his best with the ball in his hands at the PG position.

Absolutely. And anoyone who watched this team last year should realize that we played better when Marble was at the point. Devyn just isn't as dangerous playing off the ball. Mike is a very good pg, but he's good playing off the ball too.

Also Fival you may think Gesell is more efficient than Marble, but the stats tell another story. Gesell had an offensive rating of 99.4 compared to 107.3 for Marble, and a TS% of 50.4 compared to Marble's 53.3%.
