PTL Observations, Highlights, Interviews

My takeaways were:

1. It looks like we may be able to create a lot of mismatches offensively this year.

-If Tyler Cook does start at 5 and can defend the post, with the help of Uhl, I don't think there are many big guys in the country that can keep him in front of them and avoid foul trouble. Again, this is all dependent on his ability to guard the post on the other end which is still an unknown.

-Williams showed a few nice post moves and hit the offensive glass. He could give smaller guards fits with his size.

-Uhl is still a matchup nightmare at 5 with his size, athletism, and shooting ability.

2. Moss looks like a starter. It sounds like he had an off night shooting but looked pretty good as a scorer. I think his scoring ability will hopefully take some pressure of Pete.

3. JoBo is going to be an awesome floor spacer with his range. If he can handle the PG in spurts he is going to help us out this year.

Tyler Cook is going to be fun to watch!! He can penetrate, hit a 3 and seems to run the floor very well with some speed.

A player that can penetrate is always a good thing, but I imagine he might face some double teams. We're just gonna have to feel it out and hope everyone gels well together. Count me in the tempered optimistic crowd.

Not sure we can safely say he can "hit the 3" just yet. He went 1-7 last night, I think Woody could do that, and I don't think he made many in HS. He's probably at least a year away from shooting 3s in college games. His stroke does look solid though.

Do we really want him to become a 3pt shooter? I'd rather have him camped around the basket. By his sophomore year, he could be a monster on the offensive glass.

So a tweet that Bohannon drained a 30 footer. We will definitely have shooters this year.

Yes, it will depend on the success of the guys around him. His presence can make them more productive as well.

Agree. He may not need to do that in Fran's system for him. Will see. He could have just been off one night to. Look at Ogelsby, ah, .........never mind. He could hit them in practice though.

Geez Mr. Literal. I don't think anybody is pegging him to be a 3 pt shooter. Merely just pointing out his potential skills I saw while watching. I don't think he going to be chucking 3's at Iowa, at least initially.

I don't think anyone, including Cook himself, thinks he needs to be chucking 3's. However, I'm sure he knows if he can develop himself into a decent threat from deep it will open everything else up for him. It creates the Draymond Green conundrum. What do you try to guard? You get up tight on him on the perimeter and he'll get by you. You back off and he'll hit the trey.

It's the PTL. He might as well develop his game wherever he can.

Shooting threes in his Iowa debut, to me, is a good sign that he isn't overwhelmed by the spotlight. The guy has a ton of potential, and seems not to be lacking in aggressiveness. Iowa has a lot of talented players that need to be coached up by a good coaching staff. I think Fran and his assistants will do a great job. Its nice to see Moss settled in offensively as the game went on. I imagine its pretty tough to stay focused on your first night in front of the crowd.

You know, in some ways, JB could be one of the key figures to the teams success, in the future. Not this season, but perhaps next. And, for the reasons you mention. We need that someone that forces a defense to guard him at the 3 pnt line no matter where the ball is.

Thanks Rob! Great stuff here. Is there a site that keeps stats for PTL? That would be of interest towards the end of the league play.

It sounds like we might have an issue guarding quicker guards. Defense overall will need to be a top priority for Fran. I'm sure he will hit it hard right out the gate, especially with the newbies.

I will take a cautious approach to our offense. But it I am liking what we have... We should be just fine with the O, my main concern at the moment is the D. That won't change until the season starts, and we see what Fran has developed.

If you have quicker guards, I am guessing we will play more zone defense. Kinda like UConn does. A lot of long athletes that can block shots from behind on the quicker quards.

Yeah and we don't really know what kinda D we're gonna get out of Tyler Cook yet either. There's no question he has the tools to be a good defensive player. The question is does he have the will and the heart to be a great defensive player. He's gonna be on the court a lot because of the offense he provides. I hope he realizes the effort he needs to put forth so he's not a liability on defense sorta like Niang was. Niang made a HUGE impact at ISU. Now think about the impact he could have made if he would have played defense.

Cook is really athletic and seems to have a great feel for the game, I have no worries about him on the defensive end of the court
