PTL Highlights & Evaluation: Christian Williams

I believe I predicted Christian Williams to be the team's 2nd leading scorer next year in another thread. I think he'll play a lot of minutes as we don't have depth at the PG spot and I'm not sure how much Bohannon will add as a freshman.

But after seeing his PTL scoring numbers, I don't think that is a realistic expectation.

Rob, until his outside shooting does come around, if he has the handles to maneuver into the lane, say at least to the circle, he should be able to go over his man and consistently knock down the little mid-range jumper, as you said. iba may be right about Williams, but I hope he isn't the 2nd leading scorer. We need Jok and Cook and Uhl/Baer to be up there in scoring. What we need from Williams is defense, assists and high ft %.

I asked this in an earlier thread and never got answer. He's listed at 6'5 this year, wasn't he 6'6 last year?

I agree, I don't think he's going to be a big scorer in his career here. He never really has been known as a scorer I just hope he can handle the ball and be a lock down defender with his length

Not sure. I just went with what he's listed at on the current roster posted on the team's site.

Honestly, I'm skeptical of heights and weights listed pretty much until I see them at the NFL and NBA draft combines.

I include them in my stories for reference as readers are interested. I should include - fwiw.

I think CW will a guy who contributes in multiple categories and capable of going double figures in any of them in a given night. Obviously double digit assists are tough but he's capable.

I think Williams will be a scorer for Iowa. He proved last year that he isn't shy about his offense. It should be fun to watch a point guard that loves to rebound, and with his length he has the potential to cause other teams problems defensively. I enjoyed watching Clemmons and Gesell, but Williams brings a lot of dimensions that Clemmons and Gesell couldn't provide. I see this years team as one that is going to cause a lot of turnovers for the other team, but they might have a few more turnovers than last years team.

It will be interesting to watch. I think coming in as a reserve wing player is a little different mind set then handling the duties as a starting PG. He may look to get his teammates involved more especially early in the season, as he tries to prove he is a point guard. I do hope he stays aggressive in looking for his shot though.

I don't think Williams is going to be an upgrade as a defender next year over Clemmons and Gesell

It's all relative tho. An Iowa player listed at 6'5" who is really 6'4" is still 2 inches taller than an opponent listed at 6'3" who is really 6'2". I doubt Iowa exaggerates heights more that any other program.

I agree. I just looked it up, last year he was listed at 6'6 200 lbs and this year he is listed at 6'5 200 lbs. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before

That is weird. I wonder if one of them was a type o.

That is unless one school exaggerates by two inches and a given opponent by one. Maybe there are schools that don't exaggerate at all. There's just no way of knowing for sure who's doing what.

That's why I don't put much stock into listed heights.

Williams skrinking an inch is odd. Perhaps he was in the pool. :)

His double-doubles could be assists and rebounds. That could be even more valuable than points and assists.

Why? You can't just drop this turd without an explanation. Whether if CW is 6'6 or 6'4 his wingspan is bigger than Gessell or Clemmons. That alone makes him just as strong a on-the-ball defender as Clemmons or Gessell. So what are we talking about? Lateral quickness? Experience?

I read he was just shy of Six ft 7. If his height is exaggerated, I'm sure they did the same with Gesell and Clemmons so it all averages out. Its being reported that Gesell signed to play in Denmark for a year. That sounds like a great honeymoon for the newlyweds.

General rule of thumb for heights is if they're actual height is 6'6" or higher you subtract two inches from their listed height. If their actual height is less than 6'6" you subtract one inch. The only exception was Chuck Barkley, who was listed as 6'8" and was actually 6'4".
