PSU Thing Doesn't Make Sense

Okay... Been reading various message boards and articles, and I'm trying to wrap my head around this. So a lot of people are going on and on about Paterno being a horrible guy and should resign at the very least. Some are calling for his head... literally.

I'm not buying that he's guilty of anything at this point... other than maybe being a fool. I think he's been the victim of blackmail or was duped by his own university (or power players in politics).

Would Paterno want Sandusky around his campus in the past decade given what he knew? No way.

I'm not buying that he would WANT a guy like that around his campus. Heck, he told Sandusky that he wouldn't be the next head coach. Their relationship couldn't be that friendly since then.

Sandusky and / or his associates have something on Paterno or someone big at PSU. That's the only reason Sandusky would be milling around at this point.

If Paterno really let this guy run around his campus knowing what this guy was / is, and there's nothing else to it... then he's either sick himself, or dumber than a brick.

I'm not buying either.

So the conspiracy runs so deep that 9 people have come forward saying they were sexually molested?

If Paterno knew this happened and he did anything to "bury it" or "look the other way", then he is guilty as hell.

I'm just saying that I don't believe that he would do that. IF he did, with no threats against him, wouldn't part of the deal be that Sandusky has to disappear from PSU forever.

But he didn't.... he kept hanging around. Like he was rubbing it in everyone's face (no pun intended) that he could be there, even though everyone knew about him and didn't want him there.

I thought you said it doesn't make sense? This sure makes sense to me.

Joe Pa is innocent until proving guilty, but after reading the report... yes Jo Pa should have reported to authorities.

But back to the OP, a conspiracy is out of the question.

Ok, just needed to see you write that. I'm not seeing the conspiracy to bring Joe Pa down either.

For Christ's sake the world doesn't need another Alan Derschowitz; yeah, JP is innocent legally. As an a**hole he's guilty as hell.

We don't have enough information at this point..

to make 100% definitive statements about what Paterno did and didn't know. My guess is there's no conspiracy involved. It's probably a matter of people simply doing the bare minimum of what was required of them and passing the buck of ultimate responsibility. The GA reportedly sees Sandusky committing atrocities in 2002, after talking first to his Dad about it he tells Paterno. In his mind he's done what was required. Legally, probably, but how different would this be if the GA had simply physically stopped what was going on at the time, called 911 and held Sandusky in place until the police arrived? The Paterno turns around and tells the AD about it, in his mind he also has completed his responsibility in the matter. Again, I don't understand how Paterno merely tells the AD about it and does nothing else. What was described was so horrific that it needed someone to stand up and demand action. Paterno certainly had the influence to demand something happen.

And for the spineless AD and the other VP in the college administration, those two will have to live with their own sorry consciences for apparently doing nothing about it and letting countless other kids be preyed upon by Sandusky. I feel no sympathy for them if they end up spending time in jail for the felonies they are accused of. Leaders and people in positions of power have to do the right thing, even when the right thing might be difficult to do.

All along, all anyone did was what was "required" of them, not what was the right thing to do. Sick and wrong.

True. Doubtful that anyone in PSU's administration was criminally liable for anything until they lied to the Grand Jury (see perjury charges). That said, it's all morally reprehensible, and to aptly (in this case) apply a cliche, I honestly do not know how they lterally slept at night knowing Sandusky was still free in the community. Physically, most people would not be able to sleep knowing what they knew until that man was jailed awaiting trial.

ever heard of the Franklin Credit Union scandal on Omaha? multiple victims came forward in that case, and it was eventually determined to be an elaborate hoax.

i agree with the OP in that it doesnt make sense in my mind why Paterno would want this guy around and how him and McQueary could live with themselves while other kids were being abused. there is something deeper present here.

Seriously dude, Catholics have been looking the other way on this stuff for centuries. You don't get that?

There appear to be some strong similarities in these two examples (Roman Catholic Church on one hand, and PSU football on the other).

Members of both "systems" seem to have:
-strong belief in the authority figures in the institution
-belief that the institution does the right thing
-strong desire to protect the institution out of loyalty or possibly fear of retribution

Yet, it appears that both systems failed miserably in terms of leadership and accountability. Could it be that the ultimate goal was to protect the institution and its principal players, and not the kids?

So why step down as AD? Why the silence from Spanier? If the story is bull**** and you want to stand by your guy why not do it? Why would the GA participate in this elaborate hoax?

It no big mystery, Sandusky probably knows where a lot of PSU bodies are buried.

i am thinking jopa didn't make the connection that he should of told the cops. I think he probably didn't think it through like he should have. He said to himself, 1) im going to my superior and report it 2) he is not going to succeed me and 3) I am not associating with him anymore. I dont know what he was thinking, but i bet he didn't realize he also should have reported to the police. If he DID realize that he should have reported it to the police and didn't (for whatever reason), then he's pretty low.... My guess would be though that he just didn't make the connection "Oh, ive told my superior and disowned the guy, i have to tell the police too?"
