PSU GameFilm: Vandenberg Report Card

Good write up. Vandy is dangerously close to becoming Jim Everett. Just a matter of time before we see him hit the turf from phantom contact. If teams realize he panics like this it will get worse and worse as they just start t-ing off.

Question for Gamefilm: why would Vandy's release slow down? When Meyer said it,I was skeptical because he did not seem very familar with Vandy's game coming in,and I thought he had a quick release to go with his excellent footwork, but now that you concurr, I am wondering exactly why his release or arm motion would change?

Is it because of the pressure his footwork or mechanics are compromised?

I'm not sure he always has a slow release, but he has always tended to take longer getting the ball out when he struggles with accuracy. It almost looks like he's consciously trying to have perfect mechanics on the throw and ends up slowing down his release. Very tough to think the ball in there.

He's also very deliberate with his movements when working from under center. He gets a little robotic at times from under center. His release looks cleaner from shotgun most of the time because his feet are comfortably set already.

He also seems to dropping his hips too often, loading up and getting his whole body into many throws which is good for velocity but it gives defenses a little more time to react to the throw. Not gonna knock him too much for that, but it's something I've seen a few times.

I try to not to get to hung up on a guy's release because every QB is different and there is no one answer for good mechanics. Much like any QB when they struggle or hit a bad run of luck they tend to press a bit and their mechanics get a little off. Usually good coaching can help with it.

It's fun watching Vandy in rhythm. He's got a cannon and can put it on a dime when he's on.

That being said, a game like Saturday made me miss the versatility of Stanzi. He didn't have the same arm, but he would perform about the same whether he was rolling out, straight drop, shotgun, play-action, etc. That lets the offense have more options overall which can ease pressure on the running game.

If Vandy can pick these up with experience and continue to excel in the gun, he could be great, but he has work to do.

I noticed JVB "leaning" into several throws as the game wore on. Didn't look right. I suppose you are right, it is a result of him trying to "aim" the ball when he is struggling to get it to the right spot. It's not a comforting sight, you sense it is a "pressing" motion

I agree that he seems to just have better rythmn out of the shotgun.
Thanks for the response,it was informative ,as always.

I think the combination of him locking onto receivers, and Iowa not throwing the ball more than 10 yards are the biggest issues. It's tough to get a rhythm when the defense seems to know what you're going to do. Little margin for error in that scenario, IMHO.
