Proud of hawks but we got smashed in the post play

The hawks played hard but when an opponent shoots lights out it is hard to win. the hawks played hard but at the same time we really got creamed at the center position and down low.

Yeah it would be great to have an all american guard court but we have two senior guards coming back next year (and I liked their play overall overall tonight) and Jok as a junior who I hope shows more improvement.

But getting manhandled down low like roughly 30+ pts between sabonis and kerkowski and their other big guy not named wiltjer to Gabe and woody's 6 points and 9 fouls was really a brutal statistic and part of the game.

And only Woodbury is back next year and that probably will be an issue.

If I were Fran, I'd find a physical post player and let him try to win the starting job from Woody. At the very least, I'd let him beat on Woody every day in practice and see if he can light a fire in him.

The zags big men underneath made a really high percentage of their close in shots. I hope Adam W can really improve his touch and accuracy in close. Woody is a good rebounder, passer, defender and his scoring would really benefit from having the soft touch in close.

They couldn't deal with Sabonis much... however they outscored us by 15 pts from the 3 pt line... final margin of 19.

your going to count Witjer? but not White and Uthoff on the scoring?

They had a slight advantage on the inside I guess but on the outside they destroyed us by comparison.

most of their posts point were off pick action. Meaning it was initiated by guard play.

Our centers were weak but it was not the primary mismatch.

Exactly right. Everything their bigs got was set up by guard play and or good passing.

Woody a Good Rebounder? I disagree he is a 7'1 starting center averaging 20mpg and doesn't even rank in the Top 100 in the country in rebounding Per game and doesn't rank in the Top 20 of the Big Ten Conference.

Their center traveled constantly...

No big deal tho, that whole dribbling rule is annoying anyway........,,,.,,,,,,....

My wife was getting sick of me screaming at the TV to QUIT HEDGING THE FREAKING BALL SCREEN SO HARD. How many times did the Zags make us pay for that in the first half? It seemed like 1,000 times.

edit; my bad, hes gotten 2 drunk driving tickets on his moped.... Bingo bongo bango

Jok averaged 7 points a game and shot 34% from three (not that that's great but it's better than Oglesby). He's one of the few guys that can be trusted to hit a jump shot (at least when he's on, he forces some times when he shouldn't be). He's been a good piece in multiple wins. He had good games against Iowa State, @ Minnesota, @ Michigan, vs Maryland, at home vs Minnesota, vs Rutgers, @ Nebraska, and vs Davidson as well as making some big plays @ Indiana.

He's not consistent and the defense needs work but I don't get the comparison to Oglesby. I think Jok will be a good upper class man. He turned from a useless freshman to a decent sophmore when he's on.

As far as Iowa struggling against post play goes, we struggled all year with teams with bulk. In fact, we struggled a lot last year with teams with bulk. I love that Fran loves length and knows how to use it (ha!) but if we get a big or two with some bulk that could make us conference title contenders.

I am corrected as I didnt know those stats and I know White and Uthoff and Gabe get a lot of boards on this team.

I know he is no elite rebounder but when I look at box scores I seem to remember him getting his 7-8 boards in 20 minutes which isnt bad.

Maybe Fran & Co. need to recruit over seas, mainly Poland or Lithuania....those guys were active and they tore us apart in the middle....simply put, we had no answer

Every time they set a screen they got an easy look some where.

they made our hedging strategy look completely ridiculous.

I have complained about our hedging before, and I will do so again. I like the strategy if we are getting up and down the court, but we shifted away from that this year, so it perplexes me that we continue to do that when it leads to such easy baskets at times.

I didnt count Uthoff and White's points vs sabonis and the other big guys because Uthoff and White seemed more active from outside.

I guess I should have said the Zags total low post game vs Iowa's low in the paint game.

And yes when the zags were 7-9 from the 3 pt line (IIRC) and shooting 72% overall in the first half at one time then yes we were badly outshot and outscored from the 3 point line.

The 9-0 zags run in the first half was a killer as was the final couple of minutes when the hawks went down by 17 to end the half. the hawks had several mini-droughts with their shooting.
