Protocol for rescinding Scholarship offers

So what happens if PGs w/offers Gesell, Lee, and Bell all decide they want to attend Iowa? Can Coach Fran tell Bell (or whoever) thanks, but no thanks? Obviously, it is just a hypothetical, but I still found myself thinking about this. Anyone know the protocol for handling a situation like this?

You call the player and tell them that the scholarship has been filled.

They don't make these offers without telling the kids they're offering other players at the same position and the ride could be taken by someone else if they wait.

It's pretty straight forward, it happened earlier this year when Fran learned that Hubbard was comming.

Unless the kid is a top player most offers are conditional. I'd imagine when Fran offers someone he is honest about it, that the offer is good for the day, but tomorrow, or the day after things could change. If that happens there can't really be any hard feelings as kids understand you can't just sit and wait for them to make up their mind forever, you have schollies to fill.

I can't say for certain, but let's say Bell and Gessell commit. I would assume that the offere would be removed from Lee before he could commit avoiding the problem you speak of.

So basically, pen to paper on a LOI is all that really matters. Truthfully, I am not really sure how I couldnt come up with that one on my own haha

Nope, go over to oversigning.com. The dotted line only restricts what the player can do. The university can still decide to give the scholarship to someone else.

Coaches offer more players than available scholarships, they have to because they won't get everyone they offer.

For the most parts, it's a first come - first served deal. Players know they can wait on other schools to get a "better" offer. Both sides (coaches and players) take risks when offering and accepting. Both know what's at stake. If a position is filled before you commit, you're probably going to have to look elsewhere.

The rules are different in basketball & football. In basketball, there is one rule for all Division I schools. A school must give a scholarship to a player that signs a basketball letter-of-intent. As an example, last year, Iowa was required to give Brust, Larson, Marble & McCabe scholarships. However, Brust & Larson requested & were granted a release from their letter-of-intent. Note, that Iowa could have forced Brust & Larsen to attend Iowa or not play Division I basketball last year.

In football, there are about as many different rules as there are conferences. In the Big Ten, a player that signs a letter-of-intent must receive a scholarship. However, that is not the case in many conferences. The SEC is the biggest culprit in signing players to a letter-of-intent and not giving the signee a scholarship.

it seems fairly obvious to me that Bell does not have a "committable" offer any longer, so you are sort of seeing it happen right now.

we offered Bell very early and he did not jump on it. he really has yet to pick up any interest from major schools and there was some chatter that he might be ready to commit, and suddenly he falls off the grid. i dont think this staff will take a PG commit until Gesell has decided.

A poster on one of the boards (could be this one as I don't remember) with apparent ties to the SC area said he heard that Fran told Gesell that he will not accept other PGs (nor offer anymore) thru July. If Gesell doesn't commit by the end of July (coinciding with the end of the July eval period), then he will continue to recruit him hard but expand his PG recruitment.

That particular poster seems to be credible. It does square with the rumor that Bell wanted to commit and Fran told him to slow down and that they are re-evaluating him thru July.

Absolutely no inside knowledge so take it FWIW.
