Promote the basketball team

I haven't seen any commercials for Hawkeye basketball in Des Moines, do they promote games in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Not sure what attendance has been for any of the home games but it would be smart to see some advertising for Hawks basketball this year, they will need it to get people out to Carver.
We certainly don't want this to happen

Actually, If you remember back in the early years of KF's tenure, they didn't spend a lot on promoting the football program, with the exception of some cheap ticket promos. This is probably the tact they will take the Hoops program until it gets a little more successful. Advertising is expensive. You want to make sure you are going to get a good payoff.

Iv'e heard promotions on KXNO just last week. They had a few billboard spots around town.

The best way to advertise is to put out a product people want to pay to see. Northwestern buys up what I assume are prime billboards on the expressways in suburban Chicago with sayings like "Chicago's Big Ten Team" and the few times I have listened to local sports radio I have heard NU ads, yet they still have crappy attendance.

I always laugh at that.

If you have to proclaim you are Chicago's Big Ten Team, then you are not.

I agree. Its pretty funny. I listen to The Score out of Chicago a lot and "Chicago's Big Ten Team" is all over their broadcasts, I laugh every time.

How would you like to be the guy who has to write the ad copy for Iowa basketball?

Let's get mad again! Oh wait, not that mad...

They've been trying to get fans the past few years with various things including bobblehead nights, ticket price deals, concession deals, etc. Ultimately, it will come down to whether the team can win.

If they win you are all invite to my basement for your choice of a warm Blue Ribbon or a luke warm Schmidt's.

I don't think the commercials are the answer, but the amount of pub that Iowa gets in DM is borderline pathetic. We are by far the most popluar team in the state & metro, but the coverage here is fairly even. Thats crap.

I think the issue is that ISU's coaches and other website staff make themselves more available to DM. Whether that is calling in the radio shows, or making more appearances in the metro, ISU is winning the pub game in town. Especially considering that they are just little brother, literally. I mean it's Fn ISU?? Yet for the last several years, they are getting the coverage advantage.... Iowa needs to reach out to DM and other parts of the state. Now more than ever, with Nebbie in the conference going for our recruits! We can't afford to lose any to L'Ames.

ISU Basketball has more than a decent history compared to Iowa and they are the team closest to DM. Still Iowa wins the recruiting wars mostly. But hoops is different than football. Look at MSU and UM. It really comes down to putting together a winning program. That will draw attention.

Iowa does promote the team in the corridor area. They have a billboard on 380 on the South side of CR, not to mention they have ticket promos. I got cheap tickets to tonight's game through Groupon.
