Projecting Iowa’s 1st Depth Chart for 2017

Might want to mover Beyer from WR to TE as I guess Beyer and the coaches have decided to make that move.

I've heard that and it makes sense. I'll wait for now as I don't think he shows up on the first two-deep at either position.

Only thing I'm concerned about is the depth on the interior of the DL well, that and if the November coaching shows up for the whole of the season.

Is having 6 fullbacks on a college roster normal?

At Iowa, yes. many Pro Style/run first offenses have at least 4-5 listed on 4 deep roster. Spread Off doesn't even know what this position is.

It seems strange, but that position can take a while to develop, but is very important for how we run the ball and protect. Depth is key

I actually wish we would give the FB's the ball a few carries/passes a game (enter Weisman joke here)

Is anyone whispering about Cook going to TE and Boyle back to QB? I haven't heard anything about Wiegers and if he's planning on sticking around or not. But if he's staying there's no reason for Cook to stay at QB... Or Boyle for that matter but say Wiegers leaves and Cook moves to TE then there's Boyles opening to come back to QB and backup Stanley along with the freshman coming in.

Quite a few schools don't even use one. At Iowa, it's one of the most physical positions and it's smart to have depth. These guys all are walk-ons.

Beat me to it Rob. It's an unheralded position in modern CFB, but when you have good/great FB's in a Pro Style Offense, can make all the difference. I still remember Plewa/Cox just destroying people last year, they were huge.

You have to be a badass to be FB. That video of Kulick carted off against nebby, that was awesome. He flew way up my list of favorite Hawkeyes for '16.

I don't think Boyle would be interested in moving back to QB if he's going to back up Stanley. Cook could move to TE but might also stay at QB if Wiegers leaves. I'm speculating about Wiegers. He might be happy to stay a back-up or feel he's close enough to overtake Stanley.

As far as Boyles situation goes it'd just depend. Looking ahead there's that MS Smith kid and hopefully Martin coming in right? Those two quite possibly leap frog him early on. Would you want to be the #2 qb or 7 WR? At best I see him being 6th or 7th meaning maybe he plays special teams a little if that and that's it... He'd have to really make a leap to get into top 4 or 5 for getting serious reps. I'm not so sure that'll happen.

Wiegers has no position flexibility. And he should have a good idea of how close he and Stanley are. So the ball is in his court on staying or going...
Cook is in the precarious spot of being the #3 qb with no path to playing time. There can't be a much worse spot to be in. But he has athleticism which would allow him to try being TE where that depth chart after Fant as a receiving TE is pretty wide open.

So what's best for the team and do the coaches do any leaning on anyone?
To me if Wiegers stays Cook moves. If Wiegers leaves then Boyle might come back to QB and challenge Cook for #2 in spring and loser goes to TE or WR or safety?.... Being the #2 qb to a true sophomore qb isn't a bad gig in that Stanley may have growing pains and playing time could still be there for Cook or Boyle... Now if Stanley stays healthy and is as good as advertised....

Peyton Mansell also will be in the QB equation beginning this summer. The coaches like him a lot.

Thanks, Rob, for an absolutely fascinating article! I had more fun reading this and thinking about next season than I like to admit! I cannot help but feel very positive about the 2017 team, given the experience coming back, the depth that seems very promising. I was actually amazed at the number of wide receivers on the squad...just did not sink in until I read your article. Geez. You would certainly think we could put 4 or 5 darn good pass catchers on the field with that many candidates. This seems the most unpredictable area in terms of who rises to the top, after Vandeberg, of course. I certainly hope we can find someone the quality of LeShun to run with Akrum next year. l will continue to enjoy my season basketball ticket, but wow, I am just crazy about Iowa football.

I would put Parker as Vandebergs backup as that is where he was before he got injured this year. I think I would put Reiff as Bazata's backup and Newborg as Lattimore's backup.

Losing Jaleel & Faith stand out to me as the biggest losses. We'll miss Desmond King and probably CJ as well but I like some of the young corners and Stanley was impressive in the short amount of time that he played.

He has to RS don't he? Especially if Wiegers comes back... If the coaches really like him then put that extra years gap between him and Stanley. I can't see him taking garbage time reps in games burning his RS next year I just can't almost regardless of how the depth chart plays out amongst the other guys

Ideally. Yes. Ideally the coaches would have liked to RS Stanley this year. It's speculation and we'll have to see how things play out. Guys could leave. Guys could change positions. Guys could get hurt. This exercise was to put together a 2-deep for January. And plenty of things changed between last January's 2-deep and what happened in the fall. The January depth chart only is a starting point. And I'm just projecting.
