@hagertony
what sport if any do you think iowa could support?? me and some friends figured hockey would be the only one we could support.

any thoughts?

disc golf?

If an NFL team came to Iowa im almost positive the state would fill the stadium.

Agreed, Iowa could fill a 100,000 seat stadium on Sunday afternoons for the NFL.

Personally I think hockey would be the least likey to survive of the 4 major pro sports.

Hockey would be my vote just basically due to the season it is mainly played in. Football would be overload with Iowa and ISU. Baseball is boring and its too easy to be terrible for too long of periods. NBA yawn...

You guys really think Iowa would be able to have a NFL team?

No way would that happen anytime soon. Not even possible. There is not enough people here in the state of Iowa. Tickets are too much. There is already to many fans in the state of Iowa with a proffesional team in the Bears, Vikings, and Cheifs. Call me crazy but I don't think that would be possible unless Nebraska would adopt them as their team as well but then it would have to be located close to Omaha.

I don't think we could support any, however, I think Hockey would have the best chance. There probably aren't a lot of people who are real passionate about a certain hockey team.

Vise versa, most sports enthusiasts have a team they are passionate about in MLB and NFL and I don't think would leave their favorite teams to support a local team.

if we ever get any it will be Nascar and based on the success(so far) of the Truck series and Nationwide Series at the Iowa Speedway, it isn't all that far-fetched to think the Sprint Cup Series may someday make a stop in Newton

I would say an NHL team would be the best bet. The problem would be location. The team would probably have a better following if it was located close to the Dubuque/Waterloo area were fans are more passionate about hockey than other parts of the state from my experience playing when I was in high school, but obviously most of the population is located around Des Moines.

Absolute Zero chance we could support an NFL team. There is a lot more to it than filling a stadium. To make it NFL teams need tons of corperate dollars in the form of naming rights, luxury box sales, etc etc...

Wells Fargo and Principal Financial just aren't going to cut it. There isn't enough corperate money in the whole state of Iowa to support an NFL team.

This topic is silly. Of course there is no pro sports team that could be supported by the state. The entire state has a population the size of a small city's metro area.

Des Moines has 1/4 of the metro population of KC, which is one of the smaller metro areas nationally. More people live within reasonable driving distance of Minneapolis than 300 mile wide Iowa.

F Omaha...DesMoines isn't that far of a drive! Besides, if the team wasn't called the "Iowa Cornhuskers", they wouldn't be interested...

:p

I'm going to have to agree with Ghost here. . . there is no way Iowa could support a pro team. It was kind of sad to see the IHL leave with the departure of the Chops last year. The games were a good time and they sold very well and had a "pro team" feel to the atmosphere. From what I understand their leaving was due to politics and money going to the city of Des Moines for using Wells Fargo Arena more than anything.

Basically, no, Iowa cannot support a pro team in any sport.

I dont think we'd ever have an NFL team, but if there WAS a team I don't think they would have a problem fillling seats.
