professional athlete should not have twitter accounts

I usually like to go against popular opinion stick up for athletes but I got nothing on this one. If football modern day slavery, then things have gotten a lot better since 1865.

this has the potential to single handedly turn the public against the players. some other players are responding

Ryan Grant, Heath Evans take issue with Peterson’s slave statement - Shutdown Corner - NFLBlog - Yahoo! Sports

hearing players comparing this to slavery and talking about putting their life on the line when we have relatives fighting in wars for a fraction of what these players get payed. i think they can afford their own health insurance, how about own one less car you would have to insure.

I still side with the players on the majority of things when it comes to the collective bargaining agreement issue.
As for safety and health, the average age of death for a professional football is in the low-mid 50's. Now I don't know if that study specified positions or how long a certain player played but I'd say that's pretty serious. The one guy shot himself in the chest so his brain could be studied after he died. That's not to compare to the position that many military members put themselves in.

I think all pro athletes should have twitter, especially those that lack the stupid filter.

Just be thankful he didn't compare it to genocide.

thinking critically, and up till this morning when i read this, i sided with the players also, this guy is just an idiot for saying this. i still side with the players, but this has the potential to change the public perception, because most people we be very emotional with these comments.

This is a stupid argument. The health of these players is their own problem, they choose to play. I played football for most of my life, and i will have lasting pain in parts of my body for some of my injuries. I will never blame my high school or college for those problems. Why? because I wanted to play football. No one is forced to play football. If they dont like the reality of their health problems, then use the free education they recieved and do something outside of football with less risk. They knew the risk of playing football from the day they started playing. The players need to shut their damn trap and either play football, or go find something else to do with the free education they were awarded.

it could have been worse, thats true.

and i see your point, it is "entertaining" in the same way that shows like jersey shore are "entertaining" those guys we born without a stupid filter, and are millionaires for it

Very very few people should have access and use of twitter or other types of social media as most of us are too **** stupid to be on constant alert to keep ourselves from saying and doing stupid things.

I agree it was a stupid thing to say, but where does Twitter come into play? Unless I am missing something...

Good point, It's sorta like the gun control argument that's been around for years- "guns don't kill people, people do.". Twitter isn't responsible for people "saying" stupid $h!t, they just happen to provide the conduit.

I for one am a huge fan of Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc. They, with cell phones, help stupid people get their messages to the masses. Newspapers, radio, and TV while affective and worthwhile, aren't always around when people want to say or do stupid "look-at-me" crap.

A more accurate heading for this thread would be:

"Professional athletes should not speak to the media!"

AP didn't post his comments on Twitter, it was during an interview w/ Yahoo.

The alternative is for every single interaction an athlete has with the public is carefully planned, pre-written by a PR firm, and watered down into uninteresting platitudes.

So be careful what you wish for.

athletes say alot of stupid and controversial things on twitter, with have to be apologized for by their agents and whoever. when i heard this come up on the radio this morning, the host mentioned it was on twitter, but he must have been mistaken. there is a reason it has been banned by college football coaches.

there are plenty of examples of athletes saying stupid things and having to backpedal or put out fake statements apologizing

edit: i know athletes are not the only people saying stupid things on twitter, but they are reaching alot more people by doing so.

Twitter gives them a medium to say stupid things. But they have countless other media to do the same thing.

Simple solution: pro athletes should stop saying/thinking stupid things. That doesn't mean give us PC comments that aren't sincere. It means stop being f*cking stupid.
