Preview, Prediction: Iowa-Minnesota

Iowa 27-13
The hawks score on 2 rushing tds, 1 ST or Defensive score, & 2 fg
The OL makes a statement as a unit that's coming together and bulldoze right through the Gopher D.

This feels right.
Or at least what I would predict.
So far, I don't even think I've been close....even when I picked 3 different scenarios.

Two betting points:

1. The over/under is 31.5, which is amusingly low, but probably you would have to bet the under. Rob did. I will go with 17 to 10 Hawks.
2. The conventional wisdom is that you give the home team 3 points, which would suggest that Vegas views these teams as roughly equal, but I think the 3 point rule does not particularly apply to Iowa and the way it wins.

I gave up being positive after the PSU game, and it was worked so far, so I'm going to keep it going. I think MN will sell out to stop the run, Iowa won't have a counter, and the D and ST will have too big of a mountain to climb. Hawks lose, 10-3.

I hear ya man.
I can't wear Hawk gear on game day, unless I'm in Iowa City. I will put it on immediately if they win.
My record on this is HORRIBLE. Like 1 for 12 while wearing Hawk gear on game day. I was so sure I was going to break the cycle for the women's final. Sorry about that, everybody. My fault.
Also, there may, or may not be particular pairs of underwear that I can or cannot wear on game day.

Also, I don't believe in ghosts. Karma. That aliens have visited earth. Telekenisis. You name it.
James Randi was literally one of my most favorite people ever.

And yet, here I am. Believing in bad luck underwear and can't wear Hawk gear on game day, unless I'm there. I'm 5-1 wearing Hawk gear on game day when I'm in Iowa City, though.

It does sort of feel like we are overdue to lay an egg against Row Row Row your Boat. Sort of like Iowa State last year. Its hard to just keep beating your rival every year. That said, man, this team lost to NW. Iowa wins this game at home 8 out of 10 times, but every game in the West is basically a coin toss of luck and futility.

13-7 Hawks

However, this does feel very similar to the ‘21 Purdue game. Iowa coming off an emotional victory and like Purdue, Minnesota is just waiting there for the ambush. I am predicting Iowa to win this, but wouldn’t be shocked if they got clipped here.

Whether or not Darius Taylor returns is a big variable. He's talented. I wish we would have won the recruiting war for him.

It will be a grind either way, but if Taylor returns it will be more of a challenge. I've got a feeling that Fleck is going to have a couple of trick plays for us coming out of a bye, especially if we have to focus on Taylor. He is absolutely dying to beat us. I'd watch for a flea-flicker here and/or some kind of fake on ST.

As usual, a lot will depend upon how the OL performs and who can avoid TOs.

I don’t feel great about this one. They’ll load the box for sure. Gotta break some runs and get some turnovers. Hopefully we can pass just enough to move the ball. D and special teams will need to be rock solid as usual.

Minnesota is tough to figure out, they are ranked 119th nationally in total offense and 63rd in total defense. Their offensive average yardage is 313.3 ypg. They give up 373 ypg on defense. Compare those numbers with Iowa's 247 ypg on offense and 325 ypg on defense. Iowa's numbers are really skewed by the PSU game and Minnesota's by their game with Michigan.

I feel the game comes down to special teams, especially punting . If T Taylor has a good day forcing long drives for Minnesota and the Iowa defense can force 3rd and long situations Iowa will win. I'll go with Iowa 17 and Minnesota 14.

Fleck's goal for this game will be to get an early lead, knowing that the Hawks aren't built to come from behind. I expect them to take the kickoff if they win the toss. Their young QB has a rocket arm, and I look for them to test Iowa's safeties deep early and often. On Wisky's 1st possession, they threw a 42 yd bomb and completed it vs DeJean....then never tried another long pass the entire game. Iowa's D is vulnerable deep, and this may be the first game this year we get truly tested there.

I'm not very confident going into this one, but I do see Iowa winning by 2 scores. Unfortunately lately those scores have been of the field goal variety so I'm going to say Iowa by 6.

I like your math. I used to never be comfortable in a game unless Iowa was up 3 possessions in the 4th q. So 17 pts or more. But yeah now a two possession game is damn near insurmountable against Iowa and 6 pts pretty much is 2 possessions this yr against us

Uni's for the game.
