Pretty wicked game-stat versus Tenn Tech

Iowa's pass-blocking + Vandenberg's skills = NO SACKS versus Tennessee Tech

Zero, zippo, nada .... the big goose egg!

Do you know the last time Iowa opened the season without giving up a sack? I don't! It had to be before the '03 season ... that's all I know!

TT was horrible though. Our line didn't have any trouble getting a push. You're right about Vandenberg though, he gets rid of the ball quickly and seems to have a good mental clock. I'm not going to get too excited until I see it against a formidable opponent, but I do like that stat:)

If we can give Vandy time to throw the ball, he will pick ISU apart. Correct me if I'm worng, but we didn't run play action at all against Tenn Tech (that I can remember, maybe I had too many beers). If we can establish a good ground game this week, look for the play action to go for big plays.

Vandenberg was so good on Saturday that I didn't even notice him.

That could have been because the opposition was so bad.

The '05 Ball State squad got decimated by suspensions and it was questionable if they were even better than a high school team ... all the same, they sacked Tate something like 2 times!

Iowa almost always plays a pretty mediocre team to start off with ... and given the fact that it usually takes our OL some time to gel ... our QB usually gets sacked at some point in time.

EXCEPT this year!!!

Another thing to remark upon is that even though Tennessee Tech likely pales in comparison to Northern Iowa ... they're still a decent team as FCS programs go. More importantly, they were a pretty experienced squad too ... and yet that ended up not factoring too much to their advantage.

Its pretty impressive not giving up a sack no matter who you play. No one person missed a blocking assignment, pretty damn impressive. But still, Tennessee Tech couldn't get pressure on JVB to save their lives, and that may have helped the line, since they seemed to have an easy time protecting.

I think that the quality of Iowa's OL had something to do with that.

Of course, on a roll-out, Meyers missed a blocking assignment ... and Vandenberg still managed to get the ball out quick.

I don't know. I'll have to go back and check it out.

I know that we operated out of the I-formation quite a bit ... and we'll pretty much play-action pass out of ANY formation.

We used a lot of our favorite sets. However, given our weakness at FB ... I think that we were using our I-formation extra in order to help it along development-wise.
