this video is a little long but even if you watch for a few minutes it's hilarious. if you're a wrestling fan you can't help but to laugh watching this

Sounds like someone should have had more than a 30 second summary of wrestling prior to taping. That was some hilarious commentary. I guess that's why these guys are the professionals.

that was incredible. I have to say though, I am really impressed with their ability sound like they know what they're talking about even when they know they don't. they didn't get flustered when it was apparent they were lost, they just went with it. be honest, people who have never watched wrestling would think these guys were solid announcers. for those of us who love wrestling, it's hysterically awesome.

Oh My God! that made my day...

Reversal for a takedown! goodstuff.

Centerplace, backpoints?no backpoints...sprawl for 2 takedown/reversals with some backpoints... wait no back points.

good stuff thanks for posting.

Funny, but also a little depressing. This was a broadcast on the Big 10 Network. I know this is a student-run operation, but this is a joke.

I'm thankful for all the extra coverage wrestling gets now that the BTN is there, but this is pretty disrespectful to the sport.

I wonder if they even checked with the student announcers, and asked them if they knew anything about wrestling.

that is a good point. they really did keep their cool for the most part even though they were clueless.
i loved how every time someone was riding someone and they'd return them to the mat after a standup they would always be like, "there's another 2 pt takedown. Oh wait, nope, they haven't awarded it yet." You're right, it was hysterically awesome.

I went to the actual youtube page to look at this, and one of the student broadcasters posted some comments about the situation:

Youtube

Hey everyone, I'm one of the announcers here. I need to explain myself. Jake and I were called in literally 4 hours before this broadcast to call it. We're both students who didn't know much about wrestling. I prepared as much as I possibly could but again, I was only given a couple hours to fill in for the regulars who are supposed to call wrestling. I wanted to redeem myself so the next week I called Neb-Northern Iowa. Please go watch that video. I feel like I really did redeem myself.

@34marczak you should have said no. If you ever believe that you are not proficient enough to perform a task, DON'T DO IT.

@sfunoodle why would I say no? No matter what I gave it my best shot. It's because of this that I learned more about your sport. Now I'm way more prepared for the next time. I may not know what I was saying, but at least I was able to get through it. It wasn't all bad. Sure I was scared, but I kept the scores correct, I learned so much that day, and now I'm a better broadcaster because of it. Everybody has bad days. Not everybody has those bad days broadcasted nationally!

@marczak34 we are not so much upset with you as we are with the big ten network not being prepared

It's not the BTN's fault at all. We're Student U. That means each big ten school has students call all sports that mostly end up on the Internet. Since wrestling is an Olympic sport, the BTN doesn't send the pros out til the postseason. That's why we, as students, called this duel. Since it was a top 5 matchup, the national network pretty much had to run it. The normal announcers both caught the flu and couldn't do it. We just stepped up and this is what happened.

it was a bad job, but like one of the announcers admits, he knew nothing about the sport and did the best he could under the cirumstances. gotta start somewhere.

what was the deal with 'brown' on the screen all the time during the one match?

Matt Brown was wrestling rather than McIntosh like they were announcing.

Forgive me as I know just a little more than these announcers, not much.
Is that music actually playing in the arena as the match occurs??
If so, is that common?

I watched this a couple weeks ago on TV and it was brutal to listen to. These guys obviously don't know ANYTHING about wrestling. I got so mad I had to shut it off. This goes under the fail category.

It appears the music was added afterwards when the other video editing and comments were added. I loved the music from the movie Vision Quest they chose. It was such a perfect contrast to these absolutely clueless commentators. I think most meets play music before the start of the meet and during introductions but I have never heard of music being played during the actual matches.
