Prater Over-Rated?

Not a leading question. With pre-season Big Ten and All American talk with Prater, is he over-rated or worthy of the press? Speed? Size? Cover ability? Run support?

Over rated? I can't recall anyone proclaiming him a world beater, he's just getting press because he's a pretty darn good player and has made a few big time plays. Lot's of those guys around.

not a leading question..... to start two threads like this?

Notice I asked if he was over-rated or under-rated? I didnt just ask if he was over-rated. THen I went on to mention different attributes, I didnt say is he big enough? Does he cover well enough? Pretty neutral question, which I tried to do intentionally because of people like you who want to over analayze and one-up everthing that is said by someone. Sad that Hawk fans simply can't discuss issues w/out attitude from posters like you. Do me a favor, just dont read any of my threads... problem solved. I'll be sure to return the favor. thanks, take care, Love Eric

Wow! You can cut the sexual tension in this thread with a knife! C'mon fellas, we got less than 30 days til kickoff.

Nope, just discussion questions. Like to hear discussion about it. Problem with that?

when someone files papers with the NFL as a junior, they only have to stay healthy, return to school, and take a class learning how to invest.

he is the closest thing to Elmers* in our secondary.

Actually, you asked if he was overrated, or worthy of the press (meaning people have his ability pretty well pegged). You never asked if he was underrated, which would mean that he's worthy of more hype than he's getting. And the title is all "shock".

Answer: no, he's not overrated. He's not pumped as some sort of lock down corner on Patrick Peterson levels by anyone, even the most die-hard Hawk fans. He's a very good player who is one of the top, if not the best corner in the Big Ten. He has solid size, speed, quickness, and ball skills. He does nothing spectacularly, but everything well. In terms of NFL prospects, he's likely to end up as a safety, IMO, just like all the defensive backs that we've sent up under Ferentz. However, out of all the guys that have been drafted/signed, I think Prater has the best chance to stick at corner. He's more fluid in his hips than Spievey and Godfrey. A lack of fluidity usually sends a player to safety, as they tend to struggle with turning and running with faster receivers.

I don't really think he is overrated. The Hawks are really starting to create a lineage at the CB position in the NFL. Godfrey, Fletcher, Spievey, etc.
I certainly think Prater and then Hyde are the next two to get drafted. As a previous poster said, Prater does everything well. Nothing spectacular, but a solid solid player, definately top 2 or 3 in the conference.
Its would be hard to say he is overrated. He is not getting super-hyped but is garnering pre-season accolades. But he is also a 3 year starter at a school that is developing a solid history of putting his position in the league.
So in other words, he is being hyped appropriately for the player he is at this time. In no way do I think he is being overrated.

Good player...not great yet...I dont think of him as a lockdown type of guy yet...TJ Moe proved that in the bowl game. However, I think in our scheme some of our best DB's have not looked amazing because we are willing to let teams dink and dunk us and so we occasionally give up huge catch number to teams that pass alot. However, the one thing you hardly ever see an Iowa corner do is get beat deep. Seems like Prater has some interest from the NFL gurus so he must have what they are looking for.

He wasn't at the lockdown level in coverage and tackling as Spievy was, but in offseason interviews, he definitely sounded like he was up for the challenge (e.g., wanting more opportunities for man coverage as opposed to zone).

He is undoubtedly one of the best CBs in the Big Ten this year. Hopefully he has a big year.

To answer your question, I don't think Prater is overrated. In fact, if he continues to improve from last year, he may turn out to be underrated.

Excellent player and leader. Works hard, and plays hurt. He is not overrated (whatever that really means). He needs to have a big year for Iowa to have a 7-5 or better winning record this fall.

No. I remember Amari Spievey before he was Amari Spievey. He improved markedly each season, from a liability to an All American. Prater's the same way. The improvement at that position when talent meets experience is almost mind-boggling.

I hope that Prater improves as a team-leader.

Also, Prater is a guy who bounces around so much that sometimes he gets caught out of position.

If Prater improves with regard to leadership and positioning ... then NO he won't be over-rated.

Also, Prater does have to get a bit better at being physical ... however, hopefully he doesn't neglect his other responsibilites in the process.
