Powell and Willes

Don't think Im happy right now because Im not. I belive he probley is a better possasion reciver than most anyone on the team. I was very disappointed with his drop. Powell Deep YES

Your right but is that reason enough to be playing more? If he's dropping balls like the one he did he's got no purpose to be out there when he's not a big play threat like Smith, Powell and Willies are. One of those three if not some combo of them should be out there all the time. I don't know I guess I'd like to have seen their practices to see what ever it is the coaches like about Vandeberg more then the other guys

Are you suggesting if he's running the correct/ver good routes he should be sitting on the bench? Because that makes zero sense.

As bad as his drop was last Saturday, lest we not forget his terrific grab against Ball State. That one converted a first down (IIRC, it was 3rd and 9), and kept the game-winning drive alive.

We will never know if Willies or Powell are an asset to this team b/c they never see the field, and if they do, they never have any passes thrown to them.....#captaincheckdown....it's complete BS in my book.....the whole offense is BS.....I've stated in another thread....it's hard to play, and subsequently, get open when you're wearing handcuffs......and the HC has the only key...

I think the point is that running the correct route for a 3 yard gain or having a good block to gain 2 extra yards hails in comparison to catching a long touchdown pass. I think Kirk views them both equally as 1 good play.

Yes thanks in a nutshell that's where I was going with that. Vandeberg just isn't physically capable of making the plays Smith Willies and Powell are. Is he good enough to have a role sure. But if I'm calling for someone to run a deeper then 20 yard route as the #1 option on a play he's not it. He was targeted twice last game on such plays while Willies and Powell never had a single target at all. I'm not hating on him at all I think he and KMM are solid slot guys. Just use the talent you have correctly for a change. Can say the same thing about Weisman. Quit trying to run slow developing plays to the outside for him. He has to be between the tackles to be effective. I love what he brings but your wasting downs trying to use him like they did Shonn Greene. He's got limitations to what he's good at.

I don't think that he thinks a 3 yd pass and a good block for 2 extra yards equals a long TD.

I think what he thinks is 4 blown blocks and three missed routes in a ball-control offense is not worth 1 long TD. I'm absolutely sure Vandeberg knows the playbook better, runs the correct route more often, and blocks better than those two. But that doesn't mean you can't use them on the one thing they do better -- go deep -- at least 6 times a game. That's three plays for each of them, out of 60+. How many times have you heard the coach say one play isn't a whole football game?

Vandy is my starter, but those dudes get in the mix on my offense, especially in long yardage situations.

Good god, what I wouldn't do to see the spread option with him taking the dive from the QB instead of the zone read against a 3-man front. If the nose doesn't crash to the run side it's a guaranteed 4 yard gain. For some trickeration you could fake the handoff to him and have the QB follow him through the hole like Michigan did under RichRod. Maybe even end up with 5 yards.

It isn't that Weisman is bad, it is that he's Jerome Bettis and they are trying to run him like he's Marshall Faulk.

In Willes and Powell we have 2 explosive weapons...3 when you add in Smith. Yet they are being wasted. True freshman Lazard was catching passes all day Saturday. Our big guns mostly sat on the bench. The few times they did play? They might as well have been on the bench.

Agreed, but so are touchdowns. :)

Well played.

But let's not lose our heads.

Only if they follow 14 play , 8:00 minute drives. He would also be happy with a FG. Because after all you would take 8:00 min. off the clock and you would score two more points than you would need to win.

KF WAS hell bent on running the ball Saturday. He wasn't as concerned about throwing the ball downfield. He is always preaching balance but 44 rushes vs 24 passes.

He was making a statement. Of course that often doesn't always end well for him on that side of the ball.

Or was it GD making a statement to KF?

I swear that if there was a stat for touchdowns per touch...Powell would be number one in the history of the world. Only seen him get the ball a few times but in those few times have seen several crazy long runs and touchdowns. I think this guy is special and for some reason Ferentz doesn't like him.

I really feel sorry for Powell. I bet that if he had gone somewhere that wasn't coached by Ferentz he could have had a hell of a college career.

If you're a talented recruit with potential the stupidest thing you could do is to play for Ferentz. Hell, you'd be smarter to play for Rhodes. He's a piece of garbage, a tool, and one of the worst coaches in all of college football. But, if you're good you'll get to catch passes and he's a better coach than Ferentz.

No joke, I know how ya feel.

It's amazing we don't have this kid on the field more often. He might be the only legitimate threat to score after a 3 yard pass.

He's a work in progress.

Powell got 15+ snaps against MSU and NW at home last year, and I kept my eye on him. He really struggled to get open, and doesn't run routes very well. He can run the go route and tunnel screens, struggles in any kind of regular route, and isn't anywhere close to be a guy you want on the field every play. I think we need to use him in spots and get him the ball, but I also think the internet overrates him.

Willies, on the other hand, looks like the entire package. But we can't really get a look at him if he never plays.

I think what you meant to say is "so is scoring one more than your opponent".
correct. Iowa has a style that keeps games close. The problem with this style when you have a poor game day coach is you lose more than you win in these close games. The Hawks are 11-15 in one possession games since 2010. That's a win % of .423. WE have also played more close games than anyone else in the BIG. Only two teams are worse during the same time frame, Indiana (4-15) and Wisconsin (5-14). I don't see this trend changing for Iowa anytime soon.
