Potential options for open scholarships

BIG coaches are not going to be losing sleep over this question.

Not today but they might by the time conference play starts next year. I'm sure Izzo wasn't worried about Forbes facing Clemmons this year. The 1st meeting Forbes was 1-5 from the field and 0-3 from 3. The 2nd meeting he was 0-5 from the field and 0-4 from 3. That's 1-10 and 0-7.

Note - Forbes shot 48.1% from the field and 48.1% from 3 for the season. He shoots 49.2% from the field and 49.6% from 3 if he never faces Iowa (Clemmons).

I think we need a big man more... We will be way under sized at the 5 spot now. If Wagnor/Cook are going to be the 4/5 guys what a different look that'll be. Sure would be nice to get a 6'10 guy that can at least defend and rebound. I think between Williams Bohannon, Moss, Jok that we'll have enough ball handlers and that having a pg won't be the biggest deal. I think Williams will be pretty darn good and even if he turns it over more then MG this year he'll make up for it with his D and shot making. (can't be worse at hitting Js then MG)

Iowa didn't have a big man this year. Woody was tall, but he wasn't a big man. Look at Izzo at MSU, he has had a ton of space eaters over the years. Izzo has always gone for width over height. Wagner is a big man, Woody wasn't.

My guess would be Baer takes one scholarship and we bank the other scholarship for the 2017 class, after putting some feelers out there for transfers. I just didn't see that many PG transfers out there.

Plus if Jones has two years of eligibility remaining it would make sense to bank the scholarship and bring in two players in the 2017 class, as was originally planned before Jones got hurt.

Keep an eye on Cullen Neal.

I have been. Does anyone have any idea if Craig Neal left Iowa with any hard feelings? I have no idea.

ESPN has him rated as the 6th best overall transfer available this year. He has visited Ole Miss and has Texas A&M and Ohio State on his list...visiting OSU in April.

There is a list of 20 schools (as of March 24) that had requested permission from New Mexico to speak to Neal. Iowa is not on that list. Of course we didn't have a scholarship at the time so...

Good points, but the post I responded to referred to guarding Williams, not being guarded by Williams.
Next year, I have a lot more concerns about Iowa on the offensive end rather than defense.

I realize what your point was. Clemmons was a better defender than Izzo expected. Williams may very well be a better scorer than expected.

1. Grad transfer point guard.

2. A pure five. Wagner undersized at 6-7, Kriener a ways away.

Baer does not get a scholarship this year.

Baer earned a scholly. He will likely start next year, starting B1G players get a scholly.

You're starting to creep me out, Margaret.

Wile E. Coyote... genius at work!

We are NOT way undersized at the 5, or in the front court. Look around, here are the final 4 teams Bigs/leading rebounders

UNC - Johnson 6'9 Meeks 6'9 Hicks 6'8
Syracuse - Roberson 6'8 Lydon 6'8 Coleman 6'9
Nova - Ochefu 6-11 Hart 6'5 Reynolds 6'8
Oklahoma - Spangler 6'8 Lattin 6'9 Hield/Cousins 6'4

I'm not sure why people still think we need 6'10/6'11 guys lumbering around the court. I'm all for getting them if they can run the court and shoot, but they are few and far between. Uhl 6'9 Cook 6'9 Kreiner 6-10 Pemsl 6-8 and Wagner at 6'7 is more than adequate in the front court. This is what Fran wants....athletes that can run the court, shoot and rebound.

Agree that Iowa isn't undersized. Hawks could use a quality player at ANY position on the floor next year, 1 through 5. Roster needs to get better.

I dont have a problem with the lack of 6'11 guys in frans recruiting. The best team in the nba didnt use a center in the finals hardly last year... Theyre slowing going Extinct.

Now point gaurds have been a weakness. Mike was in his back yard, and other than that you have clemmons and cartwright.

This. A guy who can shoot, dribble-drive, create his own shot no matter the position. It gets old us lacking those kind of guys in relation to a lot of other teams.

I guess I'm just a little more skeptical on the transfer game than others.

We don't really need another forward, unless he can guard bigs, and we are not confident in a combination of Cook, Uhl, Wagner, and Jones being able to handle that.

We need a ball handler, but as it has been noted there aren't many of those out there.

A transfer has to be able to fit in with your team. IMO most of the transfers out there are not team guys.

I think we're saying the same thing. There is an overall need of quality on the roster, regardless of position. Of course, transfers sometimes have issues. But sometimes they don't. Uthoff was a transfer, and he worked out pretty nicely no? Talent is talent, and Hawks need more of it.

Agreed. We have 3 bigs coming in this year and have enough adequate size. There's no reason to reach here. Let Kreiner and Cook play. Might want to redshirt Pemsl to make sure his knee is healthy.
We need a 1 or 2 that can score and defend. I don't know how many of those are available.
