post spring USA Today Top 25

Now Iowa State is considered better than us.

Nice job, KF. Hope you are doing some more worthwhile things with the money you steal from the University.

For ISU to finish ranked 15th after the season, they probably need to go 10-3.The clowns will be underdogs against Texas and Oklahoma for sure. Iowa, Okie State, West Virginia, TCU, and a bowl opponent are probably tossups. Texas Tech, Baylor and Kansas State aren't gimmees either. I just don't see the clowns coming up with 10 or even 9 wins with that schedule.

because they have an up and coming young coach while Iowa has a coach who's been here which feels like forever now and has made Iowa football very vanilla.

They have a good coach, but are they beating Iowa every year? Iowa could have a great year this year and have another couple first round draft picks. But yes, vanilla.

Come September I'll be worried when we have to travel to Ames but I also will expect us to get the W.

Phil Parker will dial up some pressure; the CASH, Amani Jones, AJ, we'll be ready......

I love the intensity Jones has always brought to practice etc., but he has yet to prove he can handle the mental side of playing in actual games. I know staff are speaking highly of his play right now, but they also were in 2018 when he immediately lost his spot because of mental mistakes and not being where he needs to be. He was way too hyper out there and you could easily see he was in over his head. We have too much depth to give Jones anything but a really short leash.

Can't help but think that some of Iowa being slighted in some of these post spring polls has to do with how Iowa was marketed this spring. Not that it matters. But no spring game.....very very little hype coming from the athletic department this spring.

Contrast that with Soupy Campbell and the Clowns as flavor of the month right now. By the third game of the year this fall everyone will be reminded that they are Iowa State. Jamie Pollard is a better marketer than Barta....which isn't saying much, I know.

They're gonna find out quick that in order to actually be good, you need a real OL and a QB that doesn't lean heavily on the best WR in school history.

Does the national media even notice whether there is local marketing or not? More likely the anticipated drop off after losing two 1st Round NFL draft picks.

It could be something as simple as they went through the new two deeps and figured out that Iowa just graduated their top three receiving targets. A lot rides on how well Iowa fills out at tight end and receiver.

ISU has a bye week before the Hawks next year. Interesting. Another built in excuse (you guys had 2 games under your belt...we only had one!)

Unless we lose and then our excuse will be that ISU had an extra week to prepare for us.

Knew that was coming. ;)

We're easy to prepare for...most likely they'd use the extra week to insert some offensive wrinkles of their own.

That said, this feels a bit like 2014. I think the clones will load up to stop the run and dare us to pass. Whether we do and can... will determine the outcome. I see a 17-14 L

We're a pass-first team this year; I predict a higher % of called passes than runs (last year we were about 55% run, 45% pass). Think 2nd half of Miss St. offense.

My rationale? Two 1st round draft choice OTs (potentially), and 2 straight years of solid pass pro. Third year starting QB. Experienced outside WRs, and slot guys with potential. RBs who are adept at both pass pro and as receivers.

Counter-point: Stanley was bad with accuracy on 20+ yard targets last year, as well as when pressured. Can that improve in his 3rd year starting? That is my hope.

Every fan base has excuse-makers when their team loses, no worries.

I actually feel pretty good what we're gonna come out of Ames with a W though.

I have a hard time seeing Kirk ever being pass first. He's only done so in dire circumstances. Sometimes he's stuck with the run no matter what (see ISU 2014 where ISU continuously loaded the box...Marvin McNutt was even tweeting THROW THE BALL!!!). I hope you're right...but as we know, stubborn Kirk can still rear his head.

To your other point...if we try to...CAN Stanley execute something over 20 yards? and "experienced" wide receivers? We have one...Brandon Smith. The other guys, while promising, are pretty green. If they break out it'll be a game and season changer. That and Stanley playing like a 3rd year starting senior could be a great offensive break out. We'll have to throw as ISU has an improved defense over previous years.

September is watching lopsided victories over cup cakes with a few marque match ups. By October 10 we start to see the reality behind the pre-season expectations... some teams just don't show up as advertised...and wins over them are not what they seemed (BYU beating Wisky). Of course jNW loses to 2 cupcakes and then find their sea legs in October. Some teams are better than advertized. Some teams are psycho and from week to week you just don't know what you've got.

I think Iowa is beginning to be the new psycho sparty of the B1G .
