post defense...what i have noticed

in the games we have played well defensively it seems our posts are fronting. in the games we have looked poor it looks like we have tried to play behind or on the side of the post.

fronting is what i have thought the posts on this team should do all year. we are not tall and not overly strong in the post which makes playing behind a bad situation because we couldnt stop people from scoring when they had good position. by fronting we essentially make the entry pass more difficult with a smaller entry window. if they are able to enter the ball when we are fronting they will score but teams were scoring when we play behind so our best defense is to make the entry harder. this also helps white and basabe who are really good weak side shot blockers as it opens the weak side up for them to come free rein after the block without another defender in their way.

this also helps our guards out as they dont have to sag as much to help on a post and thus making it easier on them to focus on their man and the 3 pt line. no defensive strategy is 100% but this seems to have helped more. when we get the influx of height next year we will see if this is something fran continues or runs a different style. for now it seems to be our best tactic. i bring this up because i noticed a lot of fronting in the minny and psu games but very little against indiana. now i know indiana was more up and down (duh) but in the half court i didnt notice it. to me it would be best to front someone like zeller because no matter where he gets the ball in the post he will score so make the entry harder by making them lob it over top.

Good post. Next year will be fun to watch! By the way, I feel for you this year Coach, but a couple of good wins this week for the varsity. Girls.. close but:eek:

I understand your argument, but did you watch the Nebraska game by chance? Fronting killed us time after time.

Partly because we didn't have a 7 footer like they did, partly because our help if they did get the lob was atrocious.

it has its downfalls too. but we are dead in the water when playing behind it gives us our best chance because of our height disadvantage.
