Possible Basketball Recruits

I read a very good article in the Des Moines Sunday Register about DM North basketball team this year. The article was written by Bryce Miller along with some side notes from the DM North head coach on each player.

Here are the following players that can play beyond high school:

G Teyontae Jenkins--Leading scorer in Class 4-A at last week's start with 25.3 ppg. All-time leader in assists, steals.

F/C Darius Miles--Intelligent, great student. Moved from Lincoln, NE as a freshman.

F Sam Williams--Homecoming King, Mr. Popular. In choir & drama. North's all-time shot blocker.

G Terrance Bush--Third-leading scorer in 4-A & perhaps the best jump shooter in IA. Led 4-A in 3-pointers made last season as junior. Moved from New Orleans, LA.

G Sekou Mtayari--In Science Bound program; could go to ISU.

F Jamaal Dudley--Works hard.

Have seen these 6 seniors play. Wonder if Iowa shows any interest?

Go Polar Bears! #6 in the state and should make it to state since 1991. I haven't seen but would like to.

no offense, but i hope Fran has his sights set higher. like top 50 in the nation higher.

If they are only 6th in the state, we better have interest in no more than 1 player .

They'd have to be dominate for us to be giving multiple guys serious looks.

Here's another player to consider:

G Brandon Snyder--6'0"; Averaging 13.4 points and 7.2 assists per game in the ultra-competitive Siouxland Conference for West Lyon, which is ranked third in Class 1-A. His team has wins over the defending Class 2-A and 1-A state champions for a 10-0 start.

His basketball coach had this to say about him: "I can honestly say that Brandon is the hardest-working kid I've had in my 14 years at West Lyon." "He's always somebody that's driven from within, and he's still finding ways to get better at the weaknesses in his game. What he's going after is a result of his hard work." "It's a good feeling when you can figure out ways to compete with the big boys." "Before he got into high school, Brandon was the kind of kid in elementary and junior high that had a ball in his hands and he was in the gym all the time. A couple of times for me, it has been very hard to kick him out of there."

Snyder had this to say about himself: "Even during football, I try to stay in the gym." "It's tough because football is such a grind on your body, but I feel like I come in behind if I don't have a ball in my hand." "I love being in the Siouxland, because you've got to come ready to play every single night." "It really prepares you for the postseason, because you've got to learn how to battle through games and figure out how to win." "We're determined this year to make it down to Des Moines."

Sounds like a potential DII recruit. Send this to Brooks McKowen at Upper Iowa, he might be interested.

Clear Ragister/Clown troll job. Serving up a bunch of in-state, DII recruits and attempt to push them Iowa's direction. Like we couldn't do better. Is that what's going on here?

this user just pimps local iowa talent - does it for football recruiting also. not sure of his angle, but don't think troll.

This is really a very sweet thread. You have to love the enthusiasm of high school students. I remember trying to convince everyone I talked to that the entire starting lineups for IC West basketball and football '97/'98 were D1 material. Turned out some of them were!

Do your thing, Kato.

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news here, but there's no way Darius Miles has any high school eligibility left. It's very convenient that he moved from "Omaha" right before high school but the dude has to be at least 30 at this point, I'm surprised no one has caught on to this yet.

I would also question your assessment of him as intelligent, he's been known to go to great lengths to pass tests.

Teyontae Jenkins might be a bona fide D1 point guard. If these kids can get a team from North ranked that high, they have come a LOT farther than anyone else in 4A. Seriously, North may be the most desolate athletic program in all of 4A. I suspect the quality of their coaching, coming up through Jr High and high school is a bit laughable compared to the rest of the CIML.

I suspect that they were completely unranked to begin the year.

Jenkins may have better ball-handling skills than any current hawkeye player (he actually does, IMHO, but it would be hard to quantify). Don't know if the rest of his game measures up, but I'll leave that to the Iowa coaches to determine.

Hawks need ballers. The descriptions of the recruits Iowa needs should be…."long wingspan"…"tall enough to shoot over defenders"…"can post up and put the ball on the floor"…"Has speed and control in transition"…"shoots a high percentage"…"works above the rim". Unless Iowa can bring in high level recruits, Iowa will slip back down in the coming years. Not always going to have 3 star guys like White and Marble turn out to be All Americans.

Wouldn't be surprised if Iowa goes out and tries to find a physical point guard in the juco ranks for next year.

Kato - I thought I read on either this site or TOS that Brandon Snyder's future may be as a fall-back recruit for the football team and not the hoops team.

Tyler Sash 2.0?

You mean, like, a Marcus Paige type-JUCO?

Paige would of fit so well with this team. You can see where he's trying to be the man in NC in conference play and forcing it too much. Gessel and him could of picked up right where they left off made a great back court.

UNC guys not named Marcus Paige have made 19 3's combined all year. That's an almost unbelievably low number.
