I'm not an Alford hater. FM doesn't seem to have his players hate him which I think counts. At times in the past I do think Fran's demeanor did impact his players....on the court. Not so much past few years.

Valid point. When Fran took over the player psyche was pretty low. I will agree that yelling at someone with low confidence is not productive. Now that Fran has been able to recruit more confident players and show them success on the court. I think that has changed the player/coach dynamic.

Getting kids that respond well to the type of coaching Fran does is what it is... It's not for everybody that's for sure. The thing about Fran I think anyway is that he's got his kids backs. Through thick and thin if you commit to Fran then he commits to you. Be it tough calls on the court or just how he talks about you publicly he praises them and keeps it positive. He can be guilty of some hyperbole here and there and that's quite alright. As much tough love as he might show during games and even private practices he does nothing but keep anything said in public positive. I can't remember him throwing a kid under the bus with his play really. Ole Izzo up there he's been known to call out his kids and I'm surprised every time. That just can't go over very well but since he's been around as long as he has he's practically untouchable.

Only thing I worry about is the fact that Quarterbacks regressed under him, and under Davis.. having a QB specific coach won't change that. Just think they're not great at progressing QBs.

A couple QB's did not regress. Funny how they had upperclassmen at reciever to throw to.

What is interesting, I knew some people associated with the program where Jake ended up. The critic at Iowa was arm strength. That was not an issue after he left. Something about Iowa changing his throwing motion. He beat out a 2 year starter with a howitzer for an arm who also transferred from a D1 school.

Not to get off subject but living here in Atlanta (for one more week, moving to the mountain west) I talk to a lot of and Atlanta fans. I am extremely surprisd how few people talk about such a fundamental play calling series. Run the ball up the middle three times and run the clock off at the same time. Kick the field goal with less than two minutes ( maybe closer to one minute) left and have an eleven point lead which would have meant NE had no time outs left to score eleven points. Game Over. Something really smells here on this one. I smell VeGa$ and billions of dollars of floating gambling money in the air.

Jakes problem was never ever arm strength, and I don't ever remember anyone saying it was. Jake's problem was he had zero touch on the ball, oh plus he would throw the ball at the receivers feet all the time. Accuracy and touch were Jake C. problem.

Dolph and Ed used to talk about it on broadcasts, specifically the down and out sideline passes, just not having the strength to get it there. I vaguely remember something about a throwing motion being thrown into the conversation. He short hoped them a lot.

I'll agree on Brad Banks.. and Tate is probably my favorite Iowa QB of All-Time.. but he certainly didn't progress as much as you would have liked to see especially after that Capital One Bowl season. And some would say, including me that he regressed. Seems like Iowa QBs have a good year and then the Iowa coaches dink with the mechanics and fundamentals of them and then it all goes to hell.

I believe Drew Tate was as good as he was ever going to get. He played in a year where AIRBHG took its worst toll. I think the coaches had to take the reigns off of Tate that year and let him go wild wild west. IMO this suited Tate's skill set best. I think this skewed our perception of Tate's abilities. I love Tate as well for the heart that he had and some awesome plays. But Tate never made the final step into being an elite game manager. This is the ultimate goal for every QB that plays for Iowa. High passing efficiency/low turnovers. This gets into some kids heads and they start to become hesitant and out of rhythm. It could happen to any QB in our system. It happened to every QB under Davis, but only a couple under O'Keefe.
