Positives: Michigan

It was a tough one Saturday but there were a few things that are trending in a positive direction for Iowa. Could shout out the whole defense really but these are mostly guys that are a little unproven and emerging.

Daviyon Nixon:
He’s coming along and really starting to emerge as the player many were hoping he could be. Plugging space inside. Coaches are also using him on the pass rush due to his athleticism. I get the sense that he’s still learning his assignments at times but he’s definitely a talent. Honorable mention to Golston on the defensive front who finally looked like the player we expected this year, hope that continues.

DJ Johnson / Koerner:
Both these guys have taken some lumps but I thought played very well Saturday. DJ gave up the long pass but he was in good coverage and timed his breakup well, the guy just made a great contested catch. Koerner was in the right place all day and overall seems solid back there. Bigger test Saturday as I think Penn State’s QB is much better than Patterson. Honorable mention to OJ who is quietly putting together a very good season and looks like a true #1 cornerback.

Tyler Goodson:
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he’s our most talented offensive player already. You can tell by the way our players were raving about him after MTSU. I believe he has the most catches of any B1G RB, which is impressive considering he's splitting time with others. I like his dual threat ability and I think he needs to be getting double digit carries in every game from here on out, particularly outside of the tackles. Get this kid in space as much as possible. Kind of wish we had some jet sweep action with Goodson. Let Sargent and Young do the majority of the hammering inside.

Linebackers:
These guys aren’t flashy but they turned in another solid performance. Penn State is a big test as you can bet they will put pressure on these guys and make them tackle in space.

Nice post. I also think Nixon is getting his sea legs. He's starting to figure things out and play with more leverage.

Koerner is a huge surprise to me and based on the Michigan game...it's going to be hard for Merriweather to get his job back.

Goodson should see 20 touches a game. He's proven ball security and he has a chance to make a big play if he can get to the second level. I like Toren Young...as a power back when we want to pound...but there are a few runs where he gets to the second level...and I wish it was Goodson. The coaches have to be thinking the same thing.

Another good test for the defense...Penn State...and if they play like they did Saturday and hold Penn State to 14 points or so...well...I just don't see how anyone else on our schedule, other than Wisconsin, is going to be able to score points. Our offense just needs to get better up front.

Yeah our defense is coming along well.
Only thing is if we had a DB/safety that had eyes and could jump the route once and awhile. It would be nice to get a few picks here and there.
Also our special teams are playing well.

Exactly.
This defense has the opportunity to be special. We will see, but as of now they are legit.

I think our offense can and will improve. We’ve been a good 3rd down team. I think Saturday was a really bad play calling day for BF. Flush it and move on. I also think Michigan DBs were allowed to do whatever they wanted and were mugging our WRs all game.

We need to establish and offensive identity which should include running the ball first, to set up your shot plays to ISM and B Smith. Then you can mix in the short and intermediate game with Tracy, Ragaini, and even Goodson out of the backfield. None of it works if you don’t establish the run game.

After Geno’s interception Michigan was very safe with pretty much all their passes. Forcing teams into 3rd and longs helps along with a quality pass rush.

It's the consistency that needs to be developed.
We are pretty young in spots.
It's nice when you have someone back there that teams don't want to throw in his vicinity.
We are 14th in to margin but Wisconsin is 3rd.
If we can get into the top 10 there, it's really going to help.
Punching the ball out. Getting hands up and tipping balls. Jumping routes.
Just to be mindful of those things.
We are doing ok, but we can improve.

Our offense will improve if we play a team with a defense bad enough. Who has it looked good against? Cupcakes. In the last 8 quarters against power 5 competition we have 1 td, and that was a 25 yard drive.

Is 8 quarters a large sample size? One of those games was on a rain soaked field and we won the game. Saturday sucked obviously but it was one game.

This week should be the test. A rain soaked field shouldn't have affected too much. See Chuck Long, 1984 Freedom Bowl.

Or, see Chuck Long 1985 at OSU
November 2, 1985.

And that wasn't even the worst part of my day. The worst part was getting my face stitched up after a car I was riding shotgun in crashed on the Westlawn Curve.

My face took the dashboard on and lost. The eyeglasses I was wearing were demolished. Picked a bad night to not wear contacts.

We had a going-away party the night before for a roommate that finished his Air Force Reserve program at Ui. Most hung-over I have EVER been for a Hawks game. Frankly, most hung-over ever. Period.

I was actually fine by game's end, given the amount of beer I drank during the game. But that game certainly sucked.

One of the ironies of that game and the weather conditions was that we had played in cold, windy, wet weather all year, then finally got a nice sunny Saturday in Iowa City.

But not in Columbus where the game was played.

That was the year that it rained almost every Friday in September and October, making high school fields almost unplayable. By playoff time high schools were scrambling all over the place looking for places to play. I remember games in Davenport being played in the minor league baseball stadium.

Yeah, that fall was wet/cold. I remember freezing my ass off at the MSU game...in early October!
